A new Season is upon us. Next week, Season of the Chosen goes live on February 9. Empress Caiatl has arrived to fight against the Hive. She has proposed an alliance, but the cost is too high, and whether he wanted it or not, Zavala is faced with a difficult choice. Check out the trailer to see how that conversation went down.

Here is the full Seasonal calendar laying out what you can expect from Season of the Chosen, and what dates to carve out for universe saving.

Spoils of War

Season of the Chosen is delivering some shiny new things for you to collect.
We already spilled the beans that for the first time, some of the favorite weapons from Destiny 1 are showing up in Destiny 2 as rewards for completing Nightfall: The Ordeal. Here is the lineup:
  • The Swarm
  • Palindrome
  • Shadow Price

Nightfall: The Ordeal weapons have a chance to drop at the end of the activity depending on your medal (Platinum, Gold, etc.) and difficulty. Master difficulty will give you the highest chance at a drop of the base versions of these weapons.
Adept difficulty weapons have a chance to drop at the end of a Grandmaster Nightfall when they go live later in the Season. Drop chance also dependent on your medal. Slay enough Champions to hit Platinum and you will have a high chance at an Adept weapon.

Hot Pursuit

Similar to Season of the Hunt, we will have a new Pursuit weapon for you to earn from your quest of choice. Choose between strikes, Crucible, or Gambit to earn the new Breech Loaded Grenade Launcher, Salvager’s Salvo.

After you have obtained your new tool of destruction you will be able to earn three different ornaments for it from additional quests picked up from Zavala, Lord Shaxx, and the Drifter.

Trials

You may have already seen some teases of the new rewards for the Trials of Osiris coming with Season of the Chosen. We also have three new Trials weapons.

Each weapon will also have an Adept version with special mods, you can read more about those here, as well as a special shader that can be applied to any Adept weapon, even the ones from the Grandmaster Nightfall.
For the first week of Trials, armor and adept mods will be in the Flawless Chest. The second week is when you'll have your first chance of the Season to grab an Adept weapon.
Along with these new weapons and armor, Trials has some new cosmetic rewards to show off as well. The Ghost Shell drop chances increases as you win matches and increases when you hit the 3/5/7 win and flawless milestones each week. The ship and Sparrow drop chances increase every time you go flawless. Here is a look at the rewards!

Cult of Aeon

The team has some cool plans to shake up the Aeon suite of Exotics. Here it is straight from the Destiny Dev team on what you can expect when you equip these arms.
Destiny Dev Team: In redesigning the Aeon Cult Exotic armor pieces, we wanted to lean hard into the idea that these are the Exotics you and your fireteam wear when you really want to work together as a team. With that in mind, we had three main goals for the revamped mechanics:
  • Create role-based mechanics that reward you for doing the things that your role is supposed to be good at.
  • Create mechanics that reward other players on your fireteam when you fulfill your role.
  • Give your fireteam incentive for each player to take on a different role.
Instead of having a single, monolithic Exotic perk to handle this, we opted to take a page out of the Armor 2.0 book and give the Aeon Cult Exotics their own, unique mod socket and mods, which are all unlocked as soon as you acquire the Exotic and each of which is tied to one of the different Aeon Cult roles. These mods are identical across the Exotics for all three classes, so you can choose any role regardless of what class or subclass you are playing.
The three Aeon Cult mods, and their associated mechanics, are as follows:

Each of these mods has one perk that focuses on the user, and one perk that grants benefits to their allies. Additionally, the second perk includes an extra benefit for anyone in your fireteam that has not chosen the same role, so for maximum efficiency each member of the 3-player fireteam should choose a different mod to reap the most benefits.

Catalyst Comeback

In a previous TWAB discussing the Destiny Content Vault we mentioned that some of the content being vaulted would affect several Exotic weapon catalysts and we would be temporarily removing them while we worked to update their drop and upgrade sources.
Catalysts for the following weapons have had their drop sources and objectives updated to not be associated with Vaulted content:
  • Bad Juju
  • Izanagi's Burden
  • Sleeper Simulant
  • The Huckleberry
  • Worldline Zero
  • Polaris Lance
  • Telesto
  • Legend of Acrius
  • Skyburner's Oath
The catalysts for Whisper of the Worm and Outbreak Perfected are still unobtainable for anyone who hasn’t already earned them and will be added in a future update.

Prime Gaming

Last week, a new set of rewards were made available through Prime Gaming. Once you sign up here and link your Bungie.net account, you can go and claim your rewards. They will be waiting for you in the safe care of Amanda Holliday in the hangar portion of the Tower.

SEASONAL TITLES AND BUNGIE REWARDS

Season of the Hunt ends on February 9. View our Update 3.1.0 timeline below for what time it will end, and Season of the Chosen begins.
Before the Season ends, player who earned the Flawless and Conqueror titles should claim and equip them to ensure that they don’t get removed.
Multiple items from Bungie Rewards should also be earned in-game before February 9, 9 AM PST, and claimed on the Bungie Rewards site by February 12, 9 AM PST:
  • Free Stranger Papercraft Figure
  • Stasis T-Shirt
  • Warden Seal Pin (players should equip the title to ensure that it’s earned)
  • Hawkmoon Mini Replica

ITEM AND QUEST REMOVAL

As we announced earlier this week, before Season of the Hunt ends on February 9, it’s recommended to turn in the following items and quests or they will be removed from player’s inventories or will no longer be able to be used:
  • Weekly Bounties: Strikes, Crucible, Gambit, Gunsmith, Crow
  • Crucible Tokens and Crucible Token Gifts
  • Memory Fragments for Stasis
  • All Crow Bounties
  • Planetary materials: Alkane Dust, Phaseglass Needles, Seraphite, Simulation Seeds
    • You will be able to turn these into Spider for Glimmer.

SAVE YOUR HALO DATA

A few weeks ago, we announced that on February 9, the halo.bungie.net website will be taken offline permanently. As a result of this, personal custom Halo avatars that are currently used on Bungie.net will be removed due to the functionality living on halo.bungie.net. We welcome everyone to go to their Bungie.net profile and save their avatars to their computer as we’re exploring options to possibly allow them to be uploaded to your profile in the future.
Additionally, we welcome everyone to save their Halo stats and files on halo.bungie.net however they wish, such as using screenshots, saving the pages to your PC, or using third-party archive sites.

SDR CONSOLE UPDATE

Steam Datagram Relay is coming to consoles during Season of the Chosen, but we need to do more testing and fixes before it's ready to go live.
SDR is used to mitigate against DDOS attacks. You can learn more about it from a previous TWAB.

UPDATE 3.1.0 AND MAINTENANCE TIMELINE

Next Tuesday, February 9, maintenance for Update 3.1.0 will begin. Below is a timeline of events:
  • 8 AM PST (1600 UTC): Maintenance begins.
  • 8:45 AM PST (1645 UTC): Players are removed from activities. Destiny 2 is brought offline.
  • 9 AM PST (1700 UTC): Update 3.1.0 will be available across all platforms and regions. Players will be able to log back into Destiny 2.
  • 10 AM PST (1800 UTC): Destiny 2 maintenance is expected to conclude.
Below are some issues that will be resolved with Update 3.1.0. A complete list will be shared when the update goes live.
  • The Crucible Valor and Gambit Infamy New Light quests can now be completed after resetting ranks.
  • Ahamkara Bones will now spawn in the Agonarch Abyss and Cimmerian Garrison Ascendant Challenges.
  • Triumphs: Lore of Luna, Wisdom of the Witch, Run the Gauntlet in Cimmerian Garrison.
  • The Altar of Sorrows bosses will now rotate each day.
  • The Warsat Public Event in the Cosmodrome’s Mothyards will now count toward bounties.
  • The lift tube in the Warden of Nothing strike will now open for every player.
  • The boss from The Insight Terminus strike will now always teleport away after scanning the Vex terminal.
  • Lake of Shadows will no longer become blocked if players bypass trigger volumes.
  • Sturm will once again reload any equipped Energy slot weapon on kills.
  • Merciless will once again increase its charge rate on non-lethal hits.
  • Thunderlord, Reckless Oracle, and other weapons will once again render their scope and/or reticle.

KNOWN ISSUES

While we continue investigating various known issues, here is a list of the latest issues that were reported to us in our #Help Forum:
  • We continue to investigate PC FPS and Stuttering issues.
  • The Lightseeker Triumph is not unlocking after players have found all weekly feathers for the "Bird of Prey" quest, and feathers no longer appear after completing the Bird of Prey quest.
  • The black Blight Orbs left behind by the High Celebrant won't open portals if shot by Sidearms, and sometimes won’t open when in a fireteam.
  • We’re continuing to investigate various error codes, including ARUGULA and PRUNE.

Emuloader 1.0 released!, No more megathreads, dodgy sites, ads or captchas

Edit: Allow me to emphasise that Emuloader's ELDR system is a way to turn your existing rom libraries which are stored in the cloud, as well as publicly available romhacks, homebrew and abandonware into a format more easily manipulated. Think of it as a compatibility layer and stopover tool. As these features become possible natively the ELDR system will be deprecated. It is not to be used for piracy, and I highly discourage it, so much that piracy talk will land you an instant ban in the discord and emuloader subreddit. The download system is just a small part of a robust customisable emulator front end, manager, boxart finder, and sorting tool, please don't think that this is its primary usage, it isn't. I only posted on /roms first because of the large audience.

Introduction:
It's done. No more megathread, no more looks through mega or clicking through adfly links or trying to find the right download button or sifting through malware infested websites. No more download limits, speed caps, broken roms, password protected zips and rars. No more manually updating your emulators every week and moving installs about hoping for nothing to break. No more weird download managers to get things off zippyshare or weird names with 12 different groups and urls in your rom name that you have to manually sift through. No more mixing up regions because you can't tell if (U) means universal or USA. No more looking for boxart sets and carefully cropping and naming each image or searching for missing images because your set was incomplete!
It's like /roms, /emulation, itunes, steam and google drive all mixed into one. 6 months on and I've (mostly) finished what I set out to do.
An all-in-one client that finds, downloads, and plays your backed up games, always with the newest versions of emulators. With some cloud sync magic thrown in! It's got a library manager like itunes, automatic updating, set-up, cloud backups and restores likes steam. And it's all open source.
It will have one click sharing of games saves or homebrew roms with your friends, automatic streaming of local multiplayer games. One-click to join the lobbies of your friends in different emulators through one unified interface.

When I started, all I knew was I've seen on discords and even on this subreddit how annoying and frustrating it is when trying to grab your backups off the web and fiddling with which emulator to use and getting boxart and the whole experience and figured that there had to be a better way, kind of like steam where you open the client and its got all your games listed ready to download, with the emulators just as easy to set-up with one click to download and play, but it's become so much more.
Rom sources & .eldrs + Legal stuff:
Obviously I cannot have links to roms hardcoded in and for this I have designed a new way for backups to be shared easily (between yourself and yourself only as we all know sharing roms is piracy and I don't endorse it, but hauling upto hundreds of gigs of backups wherever you go is also stupid) called .eldrs.
.eldrs/sources are files which are basically lists of encoded games, their sizes and the downloads. You import these sources by simply dragging and dropping or importing directly from a link (such as a raw pastebin). and the client is instantly populated! It's built for use with your already existing cloud services, primarily dropbox which it has native support for.
I can't bundle eldrs with the client for obvious reasons but it will help you find some during first time setup, and there's the guide for you to make your own up on the subreddit.
Obvious disclaimer that you shouldn't use it to make your pirating life easier, only use the roms you've legally dumped yourself and don't go around posting .eldrs on the open web. More information on https://tungstencore.com/emuloade#Disclaimer

False positives and Open source info:
Although I submitted the app to avast, bitdefender and a few others a few months ago, the codebase had changed significantly and might be detected as a false positive. I know avast reports is because it says the app is rarely used (which of course it is I'm only releasing it to the public now!)
Nevertheless, rest assured that the client code is visible on github, and the python modules were compiled using pyinstaller and so can also be easily decompiled and viewed.

The End: The problems with MassForTheDead

Overview

Well, I'm sure everyone has seen the news. The end of MassForTheDead is upon us. I started in early November. After doing all the story quests and some other things I ended up with only 3 5-star people, and sort of quit because the odds were horrible. I can't remember the exact number of rolls, but I saved every single Choas Stone.  
I quit around Thanksgiving, it isn't that the game isn't fun, but the odds were horrible and the prices made no sense. I will get into the problems with this game later, but eventually, I started back up before Xmas. I had better luck this time, while I didn't get any xmas people, but I had decent luck getting other 5-stars.  
It's a fun game, but it has many problems. As a developer, I somewhat expected it to fail, but I really was hoping that it wouldn't. I actually mentioned many of the reasons behind it in my review on google play. I shared my review with a few others, but I didn't actually make a post about it. However now I guess it's the last chance I get. I hope that the creators of MFTD see this... because many of these problems I feel almost anyone could come to the same conclusion as me.  
NOTE: My language gets a little spicy, do forgive me for not being PC.

Online Only

One of the biggest problems with the game is it being online only. This means that if the game servers are shut down... simply the game doesn't work. Meaning if the game ends in 3 months (like now) everything you have to spend was pretty much wasted. It isn't like steam where you can buy and sell skins or items... you buy a digital product with the potential chance of it being taken away from you at any time.  
No one likes this... I would like to blame the devs, but typically it isn't them who make this decision. It's almost always someone higher up, but either way to be honest it was retarded.  
It should have been an offline game, are at least playable offline people wouldn't have felt so bad by buying stuff, since they could still use it after the servers are shut down.  

Multiple Versions

Having multiple versions of the game is stupid. Simply stupid. It is already hard enough for developers to support Android, Apple, and say the web... but now they need to support Android (jp), Apple (jp), Android (globe), Apple (global).  
You rarely see this in western games... However, it is pretty common for Asian games. Rpgs especially almost always get a special global version. My only guess is because of location and language... however you should have designed your app to work with multiple languages. This is web dev 101, you space things out or have scroll bars or cut it off with a popup to give the full name or details. There are tons of ways around this... It's the same story with locations, you should have designed the online game from the ground up to be usable with multiple servers.  
I don't want to go on forever about this, but it's basic things. Just add multiple languages, that was it. All you needed to do, yet tons of games every year get a "global" version just for it to die a few years later. STOP IT. Make 1 version, with servers globally. Not enough people in Germany?... shut that server down and move them to another server.  
Sorry for the rant on this part, I've played at least 20 games they forced you to play the global version and ended up shutting it down after a year or 2. Honestly, at as dev it drives me crazy they do this. People don't care you have a special ____ holiday or whatever... AWESOME, cool you have a holiday about some cucumber god, ok let us play it, we don't need a second version.  
I guess what I'm trying to get at... Crunchyroll shouldn't have been involved in the first place. Maybe as translators, but AAAaaah fuck me dude, why do they keep doing this?

Worse than Gambling...

You buy "chaos stones", which give you a chance to roll for people in the game. Aka gambling, but instead of getting a chance for money, you get a digital item that could disappear at any moment when they shut the game down. At least with gambling, you have a slim chance of getting your money back.  
There have been many countries trying to put regulations on loot boxes in games... I'm pretty sure this game would eventually fall into that category. If they are not forced to change it, at the very least they will probably make it 18+ or the local equivalent. Some countries have been trying to force similar taxes onto these types of apps that casinos have to deal with. Potentially they are going to run into an issue with this game because of the random aspect.  
They continue to make it worse by having "free" Choas Stones mixed with "paid" Chaos Stones. Honestly, I'm surprised some mom hasn't created a Facebook group about how it's tricking their children. Anyway, I don't care about this, but it is something to note, that this will probably be brought up against them later on.  
I know some people will probably argue saying baseball cards, or pokemon cards are similar... however you are getting a physical object. You have it forever, you can sell it, trade it, lick it. It's yours forever. Yes, they are both random chances, but as I explained above... at any moment you could lose it. I could go on with other things, but I'm ranting, so we will leave this here.

Price

... do I have to explain this. The prices are INSANE, let's just forget about it being something you could lose at any moment or the random chance. There are many packs and things for $32.99. Let's look at one. 515 paid stones plus some other stuff. That is 1 roll or ten items... WHAT?!?  
Look at any other game, even the MOST money-hungry games like Clash of Clash or Fortnite are 1/4 of this price... and they are games that have been around for years, with tons of content, and tons of game play, and large player bases.  
It's like paying $30 goto a movie... or $15 to goto another movie at a better theater, that also in 3d. Don't get me wrong... I LOVE OVERLORD. I love it, I read at least 2 novels a month... but the prices for MFTD are just crazy. Personally, I bought VIP, I think that it's a decent price to support the game and help them developed it... but to be honest for $20 you don't shit. I understand they need to make money, but I 100% guarantee if they cut the price in half, they would more than double their sales. Many of the people reading overlord are younger in high school or college... I can't imagine they are looking forward to throwing down $32 for a roll at 10 cards? (or whatever you call it)... however $16? it far more reasonable. How many of would have bought a "pack" for $16 yet didn't because it was $32?  
I'm an old (not really old, 31), and I didn't because it's a ripoff. I just feel like I'm getting bent over around back.

Summary / Horrible

LMAO, guys... honestly this game I love it. I love Overlord, but some of the ideas behind it were horrible. It isn't just 1 of them... but when you add them up all altogether I knew it wasn't going to last long.  
What is even worse... they announced they are closing the game down... YET you can still buy shit. YOU CAN STILL BUY DIGITAL ITEMS that will be gone in 2 months. WHAT THE FUCK?!? Am I'm crazy, or is this just me or is this a total douchebag move?  
They don't force you to see the notification, nothing pops up... just a quiet little whisper "psst, the game ends April". I will admit, they are at least shutting it down in march... Do they are not a complete scumbag... However, it should have been locked the moment they announced the ending of this game. People love this game, they are dedicated to it. They have spent thousands of hours grinding just to save up for the new stuff coming out next week. I'm sure there are people who just bought stuff yesterday...  
What is even worse, I'm pretty sure someone knew about this at least a week ago. I can't imagine some CEO just say, yea I'm done, lets tell them today the game ends. There were meetings, discussions, multiple companies involved... probably a public relations person who spend a day to come up with that announcement.  
I'm going to end it here, while I wasn't surprised I wish it continued or was offline as its a fun little game to play throughout the day.

I've been a libertarian since I was a teenager. The expanding role of the State is something that I've been worrying about for most of my life. While learning about the immorality of the existence of the State, at some point I learned about monetary policy and how inflation is robbing everyone on an unprecedented scale. I tucked this knowledge away and was determined to figure out a way around it when I started making my own money. (This paragraph is the only one involving political philosophy, go ahead and continue reading)
I first heard of Bitcoin in 2010 on one of the many forums I frequented in my libertarian internet circle. It was an interesting concept to me, but I didn't pursue it at all. Again I tucked this knowledge away for future use.
I heard of it again several months later (2010). This time I decided to try it out. I remember downloading and syncing the reference wallet and using a BTC faucet to send coins to my wallet. I forget exactly how many it was... 5, maybe? That's as far as I went with it though. At some point I deleted the wallet and the downloaded blockchain - probably to make room for a Steam game or something. Those coins are gone.
That's right - Steam. I have been a gamer for most of my life as well. I owned a powerful graphics card at the time: The Radeon 5970.
The third time I heard about Bitcoin was in May 2011. I had heard that the price was lifting off and people were making a lot of money from it. This time I decided to dive in and see what I could figure out.
This was where I fell into the deep rabbit hole of Bitcoin. I remember getting so absorbed in it that I didn't sleep some nights. I was working my day job, going home and learning all that I could about Bitcoin. Learning about how addresses were generated, how wallets worked, how mining worked, how the difficulty adjustment worked, everything that I possibly could.
After a week or two of obsessing and reading about Bitcoin, I decided that this was the most important invention since the internet - the most perfect form of money ever created. One of the most ingenious systems ever designed by man - and NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT IT YET.
I can't recall if any other coins existed at the time, but between 2011-2012 I remember other coins like Namecoin, Peercoin, Feathercoin, and some others. I don't hear about any of those other coins these days... besides LTC and XRP, of course.
I decided that I wanted in. I needed to get some Bitcoin. I needed it NOW!! This would be like buying stock in the Internet itself but better - no counterparty risk, and I could be my own bank!
I wasn't making a lot of money at the time, so putting money towards anything discretionary wasn't going to be friendly to my budget. Yes, I owned a badass gaming rig, but that was my only luxury in life. I knew I was going to buy for the long term, so I decided to put aside $500 and go for it. I was going to buy Bitcoin.
At the time, Mt Gox was the only game in town that I can remember. I don't think BTC-e existed yet, or maybe I just hadn't heard of it.
I signed up for a Gox account and figured out how to fund it. There were a few ways to do this, one of which was another app called Dwolla. So I signed up for Dwolla and got verified. I then deposited my $500 and initiated the ACH transfer to Gox. BTC price at the time: $3.
I had initiated the transfer on a Tuesday evening after work. I was informed that the transfer would arrive at Gox on Friday.
I watched agonizingly as the price climbed hour after hour, day after day. $3.50. $4. $5. $6. I was missing the boat!!! By Thursday evening the price had doubled.
At work on Friday, I checked my email on my phone practically every five minutes. The transfer didn't go through the entire work day. I had plans with friends that evening - damn it, I was going to have to try and do this on my phone while hanging with my friends?!
I ended up making my first BTC purchase while sitting in a movie theater. I bought 50 Bitcoin for $10 each - during an all-time-high.
I still hodl every one of these coins today.

I couldn't stop there, though. The more I learned, the more I had to know. The more I had to DO. That's when I got into GPU mining.
This was a time before ASICs. I believe GPU mining was relatively new -- before this, miners were only using CPUs (which were in 2011 -- like GPUs in 2020 -- obsolete for SHA256 mining).
The next day I dove headfirst into Bitcoin mining. I downloaded the software and set up an account on Slush Pool. I ran my 5970 on full blast for a while and went out with some friends. When I got back, my bedroom was noticeably hotter than it was when I left. So that's what I was going to be dealing with? Ok, fine.
I also couldn't play any demanding video games while the miner was running. I'd have to dial the hashrate down, or disable it completely. Ok, I guess I can manage that.
After a few days of dealing with that, I decided to buy another 5970. If I got bored of Bitcoin, it would still make The Witcher 2 run better!
All told, between mining with Slush Pool and BTCGuild for a month, I managed to mine an additional 50BTC that month.
I still hodl every one of these coins today.
One day, my electric bill came. $350. For my 1BR apartment? That can't be right...
I called up the electric company and told them they double-billed me.
"Nope, that amount is accurate. That's what you owe for this month. Have a nice day!"
And that was the day I stopped Bitcoin mining.
I had been telling all my friends and gamer friends about Bitcoin the entire time. They laughed at me. I told them they wouldn't be laughing when I was a millionaire.
Soon after, Bitcoin crashed -- HARD. Dropping from $32 at its peak to $2 over the next few months -- one of the largest price drops in its history.
I was dejected. I stopped talking about it with my friends. The gamer communities I was a member of made fun of me relentlessly, trashing Bitcoin every day. News articles celebrating Bitcoin's death popped up everywhere. It was the first major public crash, and I felt all alone.
I uninstalled the Bitcoin price widget from my phone. I moved on with my life and tried to forget about Bitcoin. I left the wallet on my PC, but deleted my copy of the blockchain.
I barely thought about Bitcoin for the next two years. Any time someone brought it up at work or in my friend group, I changed the subject. I was completely demoralized and thought I had fallen for the biggest scam of all time.
After this unbearable TWO YEAR period... Bitcoin came back.
One day I opened Bitcoin and saw utter elation all over the front page. What the hell was going on?
Bitcoin had surpassed the last all-time-high and was climbing still. $50... $100. And it was still going!!!
I snapped out of my multi-year funk right then and there. Somehow my paper financial loss had clouded my judgment and made me forget about the fundamentals that made me interested in Bitcoin in the first place.
"Bitcoin was back?" It had never left. It was still the same decentralized, unforgeable, instantly transferrable miracle asset that I had fallen in love with.
I got back into mining again, but I didn't leave my GPUs running 24/7 like I had before. Eventually, ASICs started coming out and obsoleted GPU miners, so I had to start mining LTC instead and selling them for BTC. I mined on a site called give-me-ltc and did my trades on BTC-e.
Eventually I got tired of managing my miners, paying extra for electricity, and dealing with switching stuff around for gaming. I stopped mining again and moved on to other things.
I exited this phase with an additional 30BTC and over 400LTC. I still hodl every one of these coins today.
Eventually, BTC hit $1000. I watched this live on bitcoinity.org. I remember this day vividly.
The graphic shown on bitcoinity for every price point was usually some sort of funny gif - someone dancing, someone acting crazy, someone making a funny face, Mr. Bean watching signposts fly past his car. This time, the gif was different - it was serious.
It was an astronaut on the moon. A flag was planted behind him bearing the Bitcoin logo.
Tears welled up in my eyes. This was significant. Bitcoin was being recognized for what it was - the most perfect form of money ever created.
My stack was now worth enough to pay off all of my six-figure student loan debt. I had thought that I would be paying this debt off for the rest of my life. Bitcoin meant potential financial freedom to me.
I didn't sell a single satoshi.
Of course, $1000 didn't last, and paying off all my loans with my stack was no longer a possibility. The price did not recover for almost FOUR years -- even longer than the previous crypto winter. During this time I bought a few more coins through Coinbase.
The 2017 run-up was a blur -- except for one day...
The day I became a crypto millionaire.
My family didn't grow up with a ton of money. I never had the latest clothes, toys -- well, anything. We weren't poor, but we scraped by. I didn't have a great education in personal finance.
Being a crypto millionaire went straight to my head.
Driving to work on that day, I remember thinking I was the most badass person on Earth. Somehow I had managed to manipulate some computer numbers around that were now worth over a million dollars!!
I couldn't help it - I told everyone at work. I was a crypto millionaire. I couldn't shut up about it. I told my family. I told my friends. I told everyone.
I went to the store to grab a few things. Walking the aisles, I couldn't stop thinking about it. "These people have no idea they're standing next to a MILLIONAIRE."
Of course, my crypto millionaire status didn't last long.
This time, though, I SODL a few coins at the peak. I bought a house and a car.
A month or two later, I was no longer a crypto millionaire.
Seeing the altcoin season was kind of crazy to me. For a few months, you literally could not pick a losing coin. Everyone was a winner. It was sheer insanity. I picked up a few ETH to get some exposure, even though I didn't (and still don't) believe in it long term.
I'm doing pretty well these days. I am numb to any price activity at this point. The last time I bought was the dip down to $4000 in March. I don't know how anyone could have resisted that one.
Other than what I SODL in 2017, I still hodl all of my coins.
You may be able to see a pattern here. There's always going to be another all-time-high. There's always going to be a crash or a correction. You're probably going to feel stupid more than a handful of times being a HODLer. But eventually these feelings go away.
I have a few more anecdotes and random thoughts to share, so I'll make them bullet points below:

- I held on to my BCH for a while. I will admit that I was TERRIFIED during the flippening. 6-12 months later, I sold them all for BTC.
- I immediately sold all my BSV for LTC.
- I hold BTC, LTC, and ETH. That's it.
- I don't believe in any of these centralized or "new and improved" shitcoins. I'm a BTC maximalist through-and-through. The only other coin I'd consider at this point would be Monero. I know almost nothing about it and I haven't done any research on it, so I don't hold any.

FUNNY
- I gave $5 of BTC to a friend in 2013. They forgot about it. I reminded them about it this year. They sold it for $175.
- I gave $30 of BTC to a friend in 2013. They sold it in 2017 for $750.
- I solo mined IxCoin (literal who?) for a few days because I wanted to feel what it was like to solo mine a block. I did not solo mine a block.
- My favorite Bitcoin meme is "This is gentlemen." Why don't people say that anymore?

REMINISCING
- Wallets I used: Bitcoin core -> Armory Offline (airgapped with TAILS) -> Electrum Offline (airgapped with TAILS) -> trezor
- Armory was flaky as fuck. I moved on to Electrum after the 20th time Armory failed to sync the blockchain. I remember having to manually export the private keys using some Python script because I couldn't get the wallet synced.
- Reddit is too slow for BTC sometimes, so I would go to the BTC-e trollbox to get some realtime action. Now that BTC-e is gone, I typically hang out in /biz/ when Reddit is boring.

REGRETS
- Not buying more. Not mining more.
- Not selling BCH for BTC immediately. That one still stings.
- Focusing a little too much on paying down debt vs buying more BTC.
- Buying precious metals in 2013. What a waste.
- Selling in 2017. But, I wanted a house and a car. Regretting taking profit is stupid, but I can't help it.

THOUGHTS
- I never once tried to convince anyone to buy Bitcoin, despite how much I talked about it. I tried to convince people of the potential and that the Fed was evil, but I never once said, "You should buy Bitcoin" to anyone.
- I see another 10x for BTC. Just buy BTC. Don't buy anything else. Just buy BTC and fucking HODL.
- HODL through these crashes. They make you stronger. After a few of them, nothing will faze you. Be a fucking man and HODL on to your coins!!!!!
- People just don't understand the network effect of the BTC protocol. No one cares that another coin has better features. No one cares that there are better internet protocols. They use what has the most infrastructure and support. Don't fall for these shitcoins.
- People don't understand the layering concept. Increasing blocksize simply isn't the solution to scaling Bitcoin - second layer and beyond is the solution.
- Taxation is theft.

Hopefully this was at least mildly entertaining.

Log Horizon Seasons 1-2 Recap/Primer (Anime-Only)

Log Horizon season 3 is about to start, and if you're like me you do not at all remember everything that happened in seasons 1 and 2. Well, I didn't want to risk getting spoiled from reading wikis, so I binge-rewatched the first two seasons this past weekend and took a ton of notes so I can share with anyone else needing a reminder or ten.
 
This is certified 100% anime-only content meant specifically for anime viewers. I haven't even glanced at the light novels or wiki. Fans who have read the novels, this is NOT the place for you to chime in with "clarifications" and "by the ways". This place is for anime-only viewers, most of whom do not want to know the slightest bit of what happens next so we can experience it ourselves. I and the people in this thread do not give a rat-man's ass about some novel exposition from volume 2 that the anime skipped over in season 1 - go make your own thread if you are compelled to share that information.
 
This post is almost certainly going to hit the character limit, so I'm not going to summarize every major character or every plotline from the first two seasons. I could never hope to outline every major character's arc and development over 50 episodes in that few characters. Instead, I am only going to focus on the rules of the world and the plotlines that were still ongoing/unresolved at the end of season 2 - in other words, what I think you may need to know heading into season 3. Even if you don't remember them well, I'm sure you'll pick up the interdynamics of all these goofballs well enough just from seeing them in action again.

When Elder Tale was a game, players were limited in what they could achieve by the limitations of built-in character animations, feats needing to have been pre-programmed as skills, and the game interface itself. Following The Apocalypse, the Adventurers in Theldesia still have access to the game interface and can still do everything the old way... but they don't have to. A magical leaping sword strike formerly activated by pushing a button can now also be activated by doing the same motions and thinking about using that skill. In fact, the latter option is better - the Adventurer can control and manipulate the skill with greater control and precision than the rote motions that result from doing it through the menu.
Just as this applies to combat skills, so it goes for the rest of the world:

Food and Crafting

Combining ingredient items through the in-game interface according to a pre-programmed recipe makes food that looks correct and does nourish the body, but has no distinct taste or smell. But, if a player with the chef sub-class actually combines and prepares the ingredients by hand, it makes real food. More complex and difficult recipes require finer ingredients and a higher level in the cooking skill or they still end up turning to mush.
Similarly, Adventurers with crafting sub-classes and skills can make superior, more refined, and more varied designs if they go through the process by-hand rather than using the crafting menu.

Innovation

Adventurers with the skill and ingenuity to create and craft things by-hand rather than using the menus are also not bound by the finite list of recipes and inventions that were programmed into Elder Tale. They can combine basics in all sorts of new ways not seen before. Soon after The Apocalypse, clever Adventurers developed basic steam engines and the rate of invention has been rapid ever since - less than a year later, someone has mixed magic and technology together to create a magitech hover train.
These changes have had a far-reaching effect on the societies and economies of Theldesia. Facets of Adventurer culture such as their food and clothing have been swiftly embraced by the People of the Land and Adventurer economies have largely shifted away from quest-like tasks such as raids or guarding a People of the Land caravan to their own Adventurer industries, which has fractured the traditional Adventurer-People of the Land relationship and lead to many unforeseen consequences, such as an attempted goblin invasion.

Teachings

Teachings (aka Overskills) are supposed new skills achieved by some Adventurers that were not possible back when it was a game. They are commonly perceived as being a higher-tier version of commonly known skills or powerful new abilities.
In actuality, Teachings are just (a) unorthodox applications of existing skills, or (b) instincts gained from becoming more in-touch with the world and losing the mentality of it being a game. E.g. Nazuna figured out that she can use the protective barriers she normally cast on other people as airborne platforms she can climb/jump on instead. Adventurers tend to

I'm really glad I rewatched all of Log Horizon. In my opinion, it is a series that has gotten even better with age. If you are debating about delaying season 3 to rewatch the first two seasons or not, I say do it.
There was no shortage of isekai series when Log Horizon first aired, and that number has only increased since. But how many isekai series actually want to seriously engage with their premise? Having the protagonist recognize that they've been transported into a video game world only to immediately shrug off all possible ramifications of this is funny, sure, but it's also definitely taking the easy way out. Nowadays, many series don't even bother with the 5-minute isekai-and-forget-it routine and just opt to pitch it as a fantasy tale in a nonsensically video game-themed setting, but even then the characters rarely engage with the consequences of the setting being game-ified.
Not so Log Horizon.
Log Horizon never forgets that its characters are real people and real gamers, worried far more about the existential unknown than yet another goblin king. It's not just that the story dabbles into politics, economics, and social reform, though that's great, too. It's the constant fear of the unknown, the optimism to rally against it, and the heart to learn lessons from it.

Should I Buy Ghost Recon Wildlands or Ghost Recon Breakpoint? (Or another similar game)

Like the title says, I’m on the fence about which game to buy, ghost recon wildlands or ghost recon breakpoint. I’ve looked up reviews for both and they seem to have had some major facelifts since their original release which is bringing a lot of players back.
I’m mainly interested in these games because of their tactical and stealth gameplay that requires you to methodically plan your approach before attempting to engage the enemy. I feel like the balance between the realism and “one man army” aspects of the game would make for a fun experience!
Also, if you have any other recommendations for similar games that have similar gameplay then feel free to let me know! (For a reference, I’m looking for something that has a realistic military experience but it still fun to play solo or with an AI team. I’ve already played ARMA and I’m not looking for a full on mil-sim game).
EDIT:
For those who shared my question but don’t want to read the whole thread to find their answer, here’s your TLDR:
An overwhelming majority of individuals here say that Ghost Recon Wildlands is the superior title:
(Pros) + more interesting world + more engaging story + more customization + offline play + Steam accessible
(Cons) - clunky vehicle controls - more arcade style gameplay vs realism (same for breakpoint)
However, there are some that recommended Ghost Recon Breakpoint as well:
(Pros) + somewhat better graphics + more gameplay options (difficulty settings) + tighter gameplay/controls (although driving is still clunky)
(Cons) - boring story - somewhat lifeless map - NOT on steam (Ubisoft launcher only) - Not available to play offline (must have internet)

This week at Bungie, we prepare for next gen.
It’s been a while since we last spoke. I mean, it hasn’t been too long. We took a quick week off for holiday, but we’re back to the grind. There’s a bit to catch up on. Since the last TWAB, new Exotics have been discovered throughout Europa. Banshee has found new memories. The Deep Stone Crypt has been infiltrated. A dinosaur was sent into space.
Quite a few of you have been asking about raid statistics. It’s always fun seeing how many players took on the challenge for a completion during the first week. Return of the Banner

With the raid done and dusted, Lord Saladin is ready to get Guardians back into the Iron Banner. This will be the first Iron Banner to feature Stasis powers, so we’re all excited for what’s to come.

For any New Lights out there, Iron Banner is a limited time 6v6 Crucible activity with Power-enabled combat. While artifact power is disabled, you’ll want to infuse and equip your most powerful gear before jumping in.
Similar to Control, there are three zones on the map for your team to capture. The more zones you hold, the more points you get when defeating Guardians. If your team is brave enough to capture all three zones, the opposing team will be locked out of capturing zones for a short duration. In other words, this is your time to shine while your enemies cower in fear.
To say it clearly, capping those zones is one of the most important things you can do. Stay close to your teammates, slay your enemies, and enjoy the spoils of victory!
Lord Saladin can be found in The Tower, offering Iron Banner bounties with pinnacle-powered rewards. If you’d like to adorn your Guardian in Iron Banner-themed loot, he’s got you covered. Two weapons from the first year of Destiny 2 have been reprised, now featuring random rolls! Additionally, the Iron Will armor set is making its return, updated to accept new combat mods.

Destiny 2 Update 3.0.1 has quite a bit more under the hood. The team has been working on some bug fixes for issues found around launch, but we also have a few promises to keep. Let’s dig in.
Dungeons - Prophecy
  • The Prophecy Dungeon will be returning to Destiny 2 on December 8, 2020.
    • This endgame activity is free to all players.
    • Powerful rewards may be earned from each checkpoint once per week.
    • Players may complete the dungeon once per week to obtain a pinnacle-powered reward.
    • Previously featured weapon and armor rewards are available once more.
Destiny Companion App – Bounties
  • Beginning next week, players may acquire bounties from Destiny 2 vendors using the Destiny Companion App.
    • Bounties may only be acquired when players are Offline, In Orbit, or in The Tower.
  • This will be introduced through a Companion App update, which is planned for December 8, 2020.
    • Stay tuned to @BungieHelp for more on this Companion App update.
New Light – Resolved Issues
  • Fixed an issue with the New Light subclass quest where Ikora's waypoint was suppressed.
  • Fixed an issue where veteran players with two characters of the same class were blocked from acquiring their subclasses.
  • Fixed an issue where a step on the New Light pursuit was not granting experience.
  • Fixed an issue where players who skip the Shotgun chest in the first mission did not receive Special ammo when the Shotgun was granted.
Monument to Lost Lights
  • Fixed an issue where the waypoint on the Exotic Archive Vendor continues to flash for players who own all Exotics.
Collections
  • Badges and Armor in Collections correctly select player's class.
  • Fixed an issue where the UI would forget which page the player was on after previewing an item in Collections.
  • Fixed a bug where some new armor mods had incorrect sources listed in Collections.
Crucible
  • Updated the mercy rule for Control and Clash to prevent it from triggering too early in the match.
  • Fixed an issue where the "Survivor" medal could be awarded to players who were defeated during the round.

    • Fixed a bug where the Icefall Mantle's description did not mention the slow field it generates when activated.
  • Mask of Bakris
    • Improved the readability of the visual effects when another player wearing Mask of Bakris shifts directly toward you.
    • Updated the description string of Mask of Bakris's perk to correctly describe its damage bonus, which applies only to combatants and affects all Arc weapon damage and all damage against slowed or encased enemies.
      • Additionally, fixed an issue where this damage bonus was applying to players who are slowed or encased in Crucible and Gambit.
  • Necrotic Grip
    • Fixed an issue where being killed by the effects of Necrotic Grip would show as being "Killed by the Architects."

With every patch, many of you ask what time you should set your alarm to in order to wake up for the fresh update. How long should you spend eating breakfast before hopping online? At what point should you shake your fists in the air because you forgot to set your console to auto update? Destiny Player Support has most of the answers we’re looking for. Some you may have to answer on your own!
This is their report.
UPDATE 3.0.1
Today, December 3, background maintenance for Update 3.0.1 will begin. Below is a timeline of events:
  • December 3, 10 AM PST (1800 UTC): Destiny 2 background maintenance for Update 3.0.1 begins.
  • December 3, 2PM PST (2200 UTC): Destiny 2 background maintenance for Update 3.0.1. completes.
  • December 8, 7 AM PST (1500 UTC): Destiny 1 and 2 maintenance for Update 3.0.1 begins.
  • December 8, 8 AM PST (1600 UTC): Players are removed from activities in Destiny 1 and 2 and won't be able to log back in until 9 AM PST when Update 3.0.1 is available.
  • December 8, 9 AM PST (1700 UTC): Destiny 2 Update 3.0.1 is rolled out across all platforms and regions. Players can log back into Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 at this time. Ongoing maintenance is expected to conclude at 10 AM PST.
  • December 8 10 AM PST (1800 UTC): Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 maintenance is expected to conclude.
NEXT-GEN CONSOLES
When Update 3.0.1 releases on December 8, next-gen console users (Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5) will need to download the full-size game, regardless if they have been playing Destiny 2 since Beyond Light’s launch. This does not affect Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Steam users. Pre-load will not be available for this patch - pre-loads are usually only available for expansion type patches and are not available for hotfixes or seasonal updates.
The estimated patch sizes for Update 3.0.1 based on platforms are as follows:
  • Xbox Series X|S 3.0.1’s patch download size: ~70.0 GB
  • PlayStation 5 3.0.1’s patch download size: ~67.0 GB

  • The lift tubes in the Warden of Nothing strike fully drain Super energy.
  • The "Wanted: The Fanatic" Triumph is not being awarded after defeating the Fanatic in the Forsaken campaign.
  • "The Hit List" Triumph is not being awarded after defeating all the Barons in the Forsaken campaign.
  • The holograms from looped emotes, such as the Luxurious Toast and Feline Fancy emotes, disappear and leave players in a static position after the first loop ends.
  • The Adored Sniper Rifle cannot be reacquired from the Collections.
**KNOWN ISSUES *
While we continue investigating various known issues, here is a list of the latest issues that were reported to us in our #Help Forum:
  • Players who are colorblind may have difficulties seeing trails in Wrathborn Hunts.
  • In the Last Wish raid, players will get the “Place Relic” prompt for Riven’s Heart even if they aren’t holding it.
  • The Binary System ornament for Symmetry disables enemy highlighting in seeker mode.
  • Some players are being forced to reacquire the Cryptolith Lure every time they launch the game.
  • Major enemies that drop Moon weapon parts aren’t spawning.
  • The Scourge of the Past armor can’t take Season of Arrivals mods.
  • The Strength of Memory Challenge can’t be completed.
  • Some icicles on the Rimed Ghost shell are black and don’t look like icicles.
  • The Lost Lament quest sometimes progresses inconsistently/not at all and sometimes needs to be abandoned and reacquired to continue.
  • Kills with the Jade Rabbit Exotic Scout Rifle no longer auto-refill its magazine.
  • The Halcyon Visage Exotic Sparrow takes shaders poorly.
  • The Selfie Emote functions poorly on ultrawide monitor setups.
  • The Wisdom of the Witch Triumph no longer counts progress.
  • Some players cannot progress past the first mission of A Guardian Rises.
  • The Drifter sometimes misgenders players in idle dialogue and Gambit dialogue.
  • Eris still has a Weekly Challenge for some players. This Weekly Challenge intentionally does not provide a Powerful reward.
  • Flawless Execution on the Way of the Wraith Hunter subclass has a delayed trigger.
  • Resetting Valor rank on step 4 of 5 on the Light Reforged Crucible quest prevents future Valor earned from being recorded for the quest.
  • Multiple ships have their rocket effects floating behind the ship model.
  • Shiver Strike Titan melee does not function with the Heavy Handed mod.
  • Collections go back to the main menu instead of to the previous section.
  • HDR isn’t working as intended.
  • We’re investigating player reports that their veteran dialogue has been replaced with new character dialogue.

How I shipped my game solo on consoles & how you can do that too (Q & A)

After a good launch for my game, i started to get some random questions from users across all the channels, but there were one user on reddit (u/TamoorGames) who had many questions and he sent them in a very nice and organized way (mostly asking about the Xbox and Nintendo Switch for each question), i did answer him. Although i own the answers, i did ask his permission to put his questions alongside my answers in public, just in case it can help someone. So, Enjoy it, and feel free to AMA.

Q.1: Have you signed up as Individual or as a company? Or enrolled into Xbox Creator Program? Can you please share the overall process in a quick brief.
- Singed by myself for both platforms, i only had to contact the ID@Xbox team, show them my game, they first didn't approve it as it was not polished enough, so i did try once more time after a couple of years, and then it was approved, and everything started from there. No not Creator Program, and tbh i don't even know what is Creator Program, will google it later.
For Nintendo, I did reach out the Nindies guy who was always on the youtube videos and on twitter (he left by now, a new guy came, and that new guy just left a year ago or so). But in general, this is how i showed my game, just reaching out the nindies team leader.

Q.2: From which country you’d signed up? Is the Xbox Developer program available for developers all around the world? I’ll signup from Pakistan
- I did from China while I'm not Chinese, i would say Microsfot is the most open company, they don't have per region issues, like for example if you are in China and try to sort things with Sony or Nintendo, it won't be that easy...not at all. Because you've then to go through Japan office (due to region), but then you targeting the western market and English only game...it becomes a lot of communications and troubles.

Q.3: Can we publish any game on Xbox? Or first we need to get concept approval from Xbox and then we can start our development. Or does Xbox have any categories on which we can only develop our games? e.g. shooting, puzzle etc
- While the certain answer for this question is not from me, but I would say any game. Xbox & Switch are platforms, mostly for gaming, despite the fact there are some apps in there (YouTube, Netflix,...etc.) so whatever your game genre or type is, I'm sure if they like it they won't mind it on their platform.

Q.4: Which Game engine have you used to develop your game? I am using UNITY. Is it good for Xbox or i’ve to consider any other game engine?
- Unreal. Any Engine is good for any platform. Don't let the engine be your biggest issue, we're are in 2020, all Engines are great and most of them are cross platform. if you are not so confident about Unity, you can just remember it made Cuphead, Ori franchise, Max & Magic Marker, and many more Xbox exclusives. And if we start thinking about Unity games made for Switch, we will have endless list! Even more than Unreal based titles, as Unity already prove that it is super optimized engine for Nintendo devices since the WiiU and 3ds.

Q.5: Can you please share the list of Hardware that you used for Xbox development and testing? E.g. Does Xbox have their own development kit or we can test our game on any Xbox? Which Xbox you used?
- Yes, i used devkits. With that said, i learned that any Xbox One (consumer device) can be turned to a devkit mode. I tested my game on Xbox One S & Xbox one X (the weakest and the Powerful one, so i can grantee the performance).
For Nintendo, i can't explain what hardware i did use, but once you are approved you've access to the documentations where you can read about the different hardware types, and then you can based on your use and game type or development type request the hardware that you need.
But all in all, for any platform, you need their hardware (aka devkit). And at least one device per platform.

Q.6: What are the main reasons for rejection from Xbox? And what factors do I need to consider while developing my game?
- If you mean rejected as a project to be released on the platform, I guess when my game rejected first time, because it hasn't a "Full playable loop". Start, Play, End, Restart if you want. It was a punch of levels, not connected, no UI & lots of Debug menus. Xbox team (or any other platform) they need a very clean and clear vision so they can decide..

Q.7: What kind of Legal document and other Document Xbox require? This will help me to save time by preparing in advance.
- Most of the documents as far as i can remember, they send to you. You don't produce documents, you just read and sign (of course if you find it make sense and nothing against your goals or considerations). Xbox was the least demanding, Nintendo was fine, no magical papers were requested. But Sony for example would require your last fiscal year revenue breakdown and documents to proof that!

Q.8: Do Xbox have their own tools for leaderboard, cloud, ranking & in-app purchases?
- Any Xbox player already know, all that called Xbox Live (which is a set of services), and most of the engines does have high level interface to deal with those services. Don't worry :) and there is always documentations and pages to help you, either at Xbox websites or at the engine (Unity at your case) site.
For Nintendo it is different, i don't have any online features in my game, because online in Nintendo is treated differently, where any user on Xbox have online access and online features, in Nintendo the online features you purchase as a product (per month, per year,...etc.), so it is common to find many games doesn't have leaderboard or clouds save,...etc.
But again, all engines already have the high level interface for those features, regardless you will support them or no.

Q.9: Can you please share the complexities of the Xbox development as you’d mentioned in your message? Like which development steps i can follow to avoid delays and rejections (Any Tips and Tricks)
- I was already familiar with the platform[s] (remember I'm already a game engine programmer), but what was new and seemed complex to me was the "rules" of the platform. Those are things you must read about at your first days of developing for the platform, due to NDA i can't talk further about that. But what i meant by the rules it is for example how to save, when to save, for example a platform would give you limit/bandwidth for saving calls per second, where other platform won't care and give you unlimited calls. Or what is the status of a player while playing (online/offline), some platforms won't care, where others would care a lot about that. Can a player change account while playing or not, some platforms would require, where others would not even allow.....etc. those are thing that vary between the different platforms, and they were the reason for any rejection i had (the ignorance of the rules). Because even if your game is already complete and finished before the port, the port to a platform is not just hit "Build", you have to "re-adapt" the game for the platform.

Q.10: What advice would you like to give yourself, if you are starting today as an Xbox Developer?
- Don't rush things. And try to "Understand" the reason behind any thing in the platform. If you just adapt the game for the platform rules, you will have lots of complications, because you could make something to fit a rule, but it break with another rule. If you understand perfectly the platform, and the reason behind everything, you will not suffer during development.

- just focus on the game more than on what platforms you need to target. If your game is good, solid, bug free, the platform stuff won't take much time. Also some info about how to be recognized by platforms could be changed, I've been Nintendo developer for long time, even before the Switch device announced, and I've been Xbox developer since 2014 i guess, when the ID program was announced. So things might be different, might be easier or might be harder now, not quite sure.

On Epic's 2nd anniverary, let's look back at what has happened in the last ~365 days

EDIT 1: Added more sources, more info, corrected some typos.
I want to make a follow up to this post, in hopes of chronicling Epic's 2nd year as a "store". I will most likely forget things, so please let me know if there's things I can add. You can also check the 2020 sticky for even more info
1) After purchasing Psyonix, Rocket League has gone free to play, has lost Mac and Linux support, have changed the UI to something people don't like. They've also required you to use an Epic account, even if you're still playing on Steam. They have also removed the crate/keys system and replaced it with a generic FOMO rotating item shop a la Fortnite. Not to mention that within hours of Rocket League moving to Epic Online Services, the game essentially didn't work at all. They also had to bribe people with a $10 coupon to claim (not even install) a popular free to play game.
1.5) Speaking of Epic Online Services, it turns out that it's really, terribly badly designed, and any game using it as a backbone can be taken apart pretty easily
2) Like every other "feature" they rush out and barely works, the mod support they've added is in beta, and only works with one game right now.
3) Similar to Mods, they've also released a wishlist for their store, almost a year and a half after launch, but for some reason has a completely arbitary 50 item limit
4) They've also added achievements, but as is tradition for Epic they are implemented in such a bad way that you can only look at your achievements while in game using a keyboard shortcut. What's even funnier is that it took Epic longer to add achievements in 2019/2020 than it did Steam over a decade ago. I guess the technology just isn't there yet?
5) Still no shopping cart, community forums, reviews, profiles, universal chat and many other features consumers expect as basic features in 2020
6) Two years into their store and the stability of the store/client goes to shit for everyone randomly, and especially when a Fortnite event is happening, preventing paying customers from accessing the products they own
7) Their launcher is randomly causing certain Ryzen CPUs to idle about 20C higher than normal if you just have the launcher open. Epic has since clarified it's a "bug" and a fix is on the way
8) The amount of games Epic is nabbing as exclusives is dropping hard. Is it because the studios don't see it as beneficial? Or is it because Epic is realizing that continuing to bleed money for games no one is buying probably isn't smart to do for two years straight? Maybe it's both
9) Fall Guys alone has earned more in revenue for the devs alone in 22 days what Epic has earned from 130+ games combined in a year, even with Epic's smaller cut. Proving once again that a lower revenue cut doesn't mean anything if no one buys your products anymore
10) Tim Sweeney, everyone's favorite manchild, continues to spend most of his days arguing with people on Twitter. He also still talks mad shit about the platform even though he's supposedly trying to "save it". Maybe it has something to do with Sony giving them $250 million. I suggest following him on Twitter because he makes a fool of himself constantly. Call him out on some BS and you might have the pleasure of him blocking you from hurting his feelings with the truth, like how the PS5 Unreal demo on PS5 runs better on PC at the same specs/resolution
11) As an adendum to 10, Timmy loves using the official Epic Games Store Twitter account to constantly remind people that they broke broke Apple's "unfair" rules and took them to court when Apple punished them for breaking contract. Currently the lawsuit is pending trial, but so far Epic has been bent over a barrel and spanked by the judges. He has made comments saying his fight with Apple is similar to civil rights, has copied Apple's 1984 commercial, has made a skin in game mocking Tim Cook, and even sent influencers merch to keep their "#freefortnite" trending. This is a long topic, and I suggest watching Hoeg Law's playlist on the matter. It's long, but goes into extreme detail on why Epic's lawsuit is nothing more than tantrum FUD. Apple has since lowered their revenue cut to 15% for apps that make under $1m in revenue a year, which applies to well over 90% of app makers. Naturally, Tim Sweeney is not happy because it was never actually about the cut for smaller devs, he wanted the cut lowered for himself for more money
12) Fortnite has added both an optional subscription to the game on top of a system where you can get rewards for getting friends who've stopped playing to play more. This is all happening while Fortnite is losing revenue month after month, year after year
13) while not closely related to Epic, Tim is still friends with Randy Pitchford, a guy who used a social/racial issue in George Floyd's death to advertise a game about killing pigs (cops), and who’s company recently published a game called Godfall as an Epic exclusive (and the game is pretty terrible too). Randy is notorious in the Epic community, when early on in the launcher he made snide "promises" that Steam would be a dying store in 5 to 10 years, and who said that by the time BL3 launched on Epic, the client would be feature complete (SOURCE NEEDED)
14) Epic Games is still extremely bad at paying pros and creators their earnings due to "payment issues"
15) Probably in order to continue boosting "monthly active users" (The only stat Epic ever gives, as if its important when those users aren't spending money), Epic Games has added Spotify to the client for download.
16) unlike the first year, where Epic released their revenue numbers, top selling games, and other information with tons of doublespeak to hide their horrible performance (The average account spent a little over $2 for the entire year); they have not released 2020 numbers yet.
17) As posted in the previous year roundup's number 14, Epic Games Store still has an issue with Ubisoft games, where if you buy a Ubi game on EGS, and then install it, it will launch Uplay and install the game a 2nd time

If you really don‘t know how to start, here is a list of ways to market a game I learned through practice (mostly free games), videos and blogs. I saw a lot of posts about starting, and wanted to share a list.
I don‘t make a living from GameDev (yet, hopefully) with my studio SmokeSomeFrogs, so I shouldn‘t and won‘t tell you which of these ways is more effective than the other. This is just for inspiration and starting :D
I also don‘t include stuff that I personally think is scummy or against store rules.
It is in mind with a PC game.

  1. Reach out to gaming press. Write them a mail, tell them about your game, send a key.
  2. Reach out to bloggers.
  3. Reach out to streamers.
  4. Reach out to YouTubers.
  5. Reach out to non-gaming press, like local newspapers.
  6. Reach out to gaming-related Twitteraccounts.
  7. Run banner ads.
  8. Run video ads.
  9. Pay YouTubers to play your game.
  10. Pay streamers to play your game.
  11. Run social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, …)
  12. Write a blog. (Tumblr, own website, blogger, …)
  13. Become a YouTuber and show your GameDev.
  14. If you are doing something else on YouTube you can still promote your game.
  15. Become a Streamer and show your GameDev.
  16. If you are doing something else on your Stream you can still promote your game.
  17. Write postmortems for your game.
  18. Put up a Steam page.
  19. Promote your games on other games pages of yourself.
  20. Go to multiple storefronts. Steam, Itch, Humble, Gog, Gamejolt, Epic …, everybody gives you visibility.
  21. Port your PC game to another platform (Linux, Mac) or consoles, mobile.
  22. Promote your games in other games of yourself.
  23. Improve your Steam tags, your store description etc.
  24. Have your own website and sell your game there also.
  25. Put out a trailer on YouTube.
  26. Try to be an early adopter of a new social media platform.
  27. Collaborate with other devs to make a game.
  28. Collaborate with other devs in a bundle.
  29. Get a Steam developer page.
  30. Run offline ads.
  31. Post on Reddit.
  32. Have a newsletter.
  33. Do a podcast.
  34. Surely also reach out to gaming podcasters. And be nice!
  35. Print flyers and distribute them.
  36. Go to something like PAX, Gamescom etc.
  37. Go to non-gaming related trade fairs but that still fit your game. Horrorfilm for a Horrorgame can work etc.
  38. Run visibility rounds for your game on Steam.
  39. Find forums that are a good fit for your niche.
  40. Participate in bundles.
  41. Participate in sales.
  42. Make a free demo to promote your game.
  43. Make a free game to promote your game.
  44. Do other pieces of media and promote the game with them. Webcomics, books, etc.
  45. Participate in the Steam game festival.
  46. Have function in your game to share gifs.
  47. Write to a publisher so they handle the stuff for you.
  48. Localize your game/game store page to make it more appealing for non-english speaking audiences. And reach also out to non-english streamers, youtubers, press, ...
  49. Give your game more features, some people search especially for them (Steam Achievements for example).
  50. Update your game and post about (seasonal updates for example)

How to make apps like steam think my laptop is offline, while it is still online?

I have had this question for a while and I've taken a couple hours researching and can't find any help on it so I've brought it here.
Family sharing is amazing, but it means that the person who shared their library to you can't play any of their games, otherwise you get kicked out. However, I found out that you can play any of the games while having steam open, then turning off your Wi-Fi. Of course, I don't want to be offline on my laptop though, but I still want steam to be offline.
Is there any kind of software I can use to make this happen? Perhaps windows firewall? (idk how to use it). Any kind of help is appreciated!

[Let's Build] 1d100 Roommate shenanigans that happen while a ship is traveling FTL

Hey gang! I'm starting a far future sci fi campaign pretty soon and I'd like to add some flavor and RP to FTL travel instead of "seven days pass, you arrive in the system" when there's nothing prepared for the transit. I'm pulling inspiration from the living arrangements of Star Trek, where the personal lives of the characters had a presence in the show during less dangerous times.
Assume FTL transit time is between one and fourteen days, so a handful of people sharing a flat together for that long without going outside (not relatable at all). They all have their own rooms and private bathrooms.

  16. The group is trading traditional and cultural horror stories. Some of the members have particularly strong feelings about a couple of the stories.
  17. A small group of crew have decided to throw a dance party in the middle of the recreational room. This is an issue to those who dislike the occasion, and baffles those who don't understand dancing.
  18. A relationship between two crew mates is becoming a bit of an issue.
  19. One of the crew has bought way too hard into an MLM and is peddling their wares to everyone who will listen (and everyone who won't).
  20. Everytime a crewmate is disturbed in their room they're too relaxed. We're talking robe, slippers, essential oils - this crewmate is a chronic, indulgent lounger. THis can be awkward when they need to leave theirr cabin in a hurry, like for emergencies.

  22. The ship is regularly receiving encrypted messages but it's not clear who is reciving them or what they're about. All anyone knows is that the messages are digitally signed by a competitor.
  23. Their pet doesn't really like them and regularly slepes in anyone's quarters it can get into other than its owner's. It is relentless in the early morning when it needs to be let out to pee.
  24. There's a damn space possum somewhere on the ship. It's mostly harmless but rarely detectable except when it chews around an important wire and a system goes down. Sometimes it can be heard scrambling around behind the walls.
  25. All of the furniture in one of the cabins is smashed beyond usability, including the bed. It's not clear if a former or current crewmate is responsible, or if it was damaged in a fit of rage, investigation or raucous party.
  26. The ship likes to play music late at night when it thinks everyone is asleep. The ship's idea of a banging tune sounds more or less like alien ghost whales quietly weeping. Anyone who happens to be up late may begin to believe the ship is haunted.
  27. One of the maintenance droids watches people sleep. This cannot be explained by its programming, or its rudimentary language. What is it thinking?
  28. One of the crew is taking drugs to stay awake for days at a time. It's affecting their job performance but wow do they get a lot of cleaning done!
  29. The, "it's just a prank bro," bro has been setting up borderline dangerous surprises for the other crew and trying to catch their reactions on camera. NOt only is it obnoxious, the vids keep going viral and strangers are starting to recognize the victims.

  55. A group of crew members start a secret fight club team in the holodeck after a member of an away team returns with the idol of a planet's god of war.
  56. There are two chefs on the vessel, they're both convinced one is better than the other (in reality they're both very bad but all the ship's got).
  57. One crewmate gives another an alcoholic beverage from their planet that gets them drunk instantly. However, a night's sleep and water doesn't seem to have any effect at sobering them up.
  58. The grav plating polarity is reversed.
  59. The room-mate's Tellurian Stinging Fleas Farm springs a leak on your bed. Thankfully, the room-mate's Poisonous Chekovian Death Adder LOVES eating them, so they set them free without telling you.
  60. The engineer decides it is necessary to use the communal dining area to clean and decontaminate mildly radioactive life-support parts.
  61. The room-mate's cold progresses to full on "Fast-Zombie" cannibalism.
  62. Fingernail clippings, or similar bodily detritus, wind up scattered all over your bunk.
  63. The roommate uses up every bit of sterile gauze from the emergency first aid kits, in order to pretend that their favorite stuffed animal is a mummy; and doesn't tell anyone they did so.

  65. Short sheeted your bunk, again, and placed fake Tellaxian feces on the pillow. At least, you HOPE it is fake.

  68. Someone goes overboard with the label maker, and now there is a painted line down the middle of the corridor and half the crew is forbidden from crossing over to the other half, just to keep the peace.

  70. One of the crew members makes a meal for everyone else. It becomes painfully obvious shortly into the meal that this crew member can't cook. Several of the team end up with stomach aches.
  71. Somebody brings an unauthorized pet back with them from the last away mission. Once onboard, the pet starts reproducing out of control and quickly overtakes most of the ship.
  72. An experiment in the science lab suddenly teleports everyone in the ship exactly 1 centimeter in a random direction. Ensign Roberts now needs prosthetic feet due to this occurrence, and we won't talk about what happened to Ensign Murphy.
  73. The protein replicators won't stop replicating protein goop that smells like a mixture of sewer gasses and rancid gym socks, despite what settings are used. One crewmember seems to like the taste, and it isn't the one you're thinking of...
  74. One of the crew goes insane, and starts believing that they have mental powers.
  75. One member of the crew REALLY DOES HAVE mental powers, the fact that they can make you explode just by thinking about it, gets around the ship quickly.
  76. One crewmember has been writing a series of holo-sitcoms and secretly using the other crew as templates for characters.
  77. A crew-member starts insisting that this ship and everyone on it, are simply the results of them being trapped on the holodeck.
  78. Literally NOTHING happens. Like one second you are all bored out of your minds, and then BAM you can't remember the last six cycles and more than one of the crew reports waking up in tubs of ice, missing some organs.
  79. The science lab accidentally releases an experimental mixture of alien spores and gaseous mood enhancers; now every fifteen minutes there is a spontaneous musical or dance number happening somewhere on the ship.
  80. Three words: "Quantum Vacuum Spiders." This guy knows what I'm talkin' about, YEAH!!
  81. The Captain decided to add combat-readiness drugs to the water supply to sharpen crew performance. Now the security chief has declared the brig as thier own kingdom and is attacking all challengers.
  82. A security update on the 'droids fails, and suddenly they are all in: "Kill All Humans" mode.
  83. Someone forgets to pay the subscription service for the ship-wide communications network permission license the last time we were docked. Until the ship docks again, we all have to sit through advertisements and take surveys in order to use comms. The advertising song about Tribble-cereal is adorable though!
  84. The Captain has gotten into the habit of ordering the inertial dampeners be taken offline, "in order to get a sense of speed during acceleration". Now we go the same speed, but are crushed into our chairs during the whole trip.
  85. Ever have someone's fart smell so bad you had to vent the whole ship's atmosphere out the airlocks?
  86. Everyone knows it is bad luck to bring bananas on board ship. The last person that did so got thrown out the airlock!
  87. Your roommate won't stop making cruel jokes about "That one alien crew member that totally matches the stereotype for their species."
  88. A crewmember gets drunk and challenges another crewmate with compound eyes to a staring competition. Both wind up in medbay.
  89. It turns out more than half of the crew secretly worship an evil space entity that is slowly warping thier brains with cannibalism, fear, and paranoia. They all keep it secret for fear of being discovered. Then one evil worshiper finds another making a trap in the corridor at the end of shift, and now you're stuck being a contestent in "The Most Dangerous Game" being hunted by the rest of the crew, and possibly the only one not being mind controlled by evil.
  90. There's a new addictive videogame going around that leaves your crewmates as drooling vegetables. You tried it, but didn't see what was so great about it.
  91. Corporate installed pay-toilets on all the refresher units the last time you docked. Now the crew is finding "new" and "inventive" hygiene solutions.
  92. One of the engineering crew discover that corporate has been lowering the oxygen levels in the testing chambers during crew evaluations, "in order to avoid giving raises for performance improvement".
  93. For the duration of FTL, exactly half the crew appears to run backwards in time, with predictable havoc on crew functions and personal relationships. The effect ends as soon as the ship drops out of drift, but neither half of the crew can agree on which half was affected afterwards.
  94. At the last port of call, some orphans snuck aboard. A few crew got caught trying to disguise the kids by having them stand on each other's shoulders inside a resized spacesuit. Spaceman 'Justaguy' will be placed in the brig until the next port of call.
  95. Ensign Ripley receives one demerit for "trying to teach the power loader how to dance" and also one for use of foul language.
  96. The ship is saved after a hull breach is patched with some gravy from the ship's cafeteria. Engineering crewmate Roscoe will be awarded an extra cycle of pay and another food ration for giving up thier "mashed potatoes" during the emergency.
  97. Notice to All Crew: Rumors that the Cafeteria is using Industrial Adhesive as Gravy during Salisbury Steak Night are false.
  98. An anonymous crewmate has doodled waterfowl on every console on the ship. (Who's been drawing ducks?)
  99. A Poker (or other gambling game of your choice) game gets too out of hand and now you got gambling banned on the ship. Good job - you ruined it.
  100. Doctor Hawk made their own homemade distillery out of medical equipment - Major Burnside does not like the mockery of their uniform.
