sky bet league 1 top goalscorer - win

A curious post turned into some interesting find..

A curious post turned into some interesting find..
I finished a satisfying season managing Middlesbrough at Sky Bet Championship, and I noticed that my left wing-back, Mitchell Dijks (29 yrs), was my top scorer this season. He is not my penalty taker and the only penalty he attempted (and scored) was in the last game, when I noticed that he was my top scorer.
First, a picture of his attributes:
Attribute of my top scorer (6 finishing, 4 long shots, 12 heading)
His stats this season are as follows:
18 Goals and 6 assists over 26 league apps (6 subs), 2 assists over 5 league cup apps, 13.2 Km covered per game (most in team was an AP at AMC position with 13.3 Km, third in team was an WBR with 13.1 Km. They are the only ones covering 13+ Km per game.)
My team was never lacking on the attacking side, scoring a total of 94 goals over 56 games and lifting both the league and the league cup:
Team statistics
Now it's time to show my tactics:
A high-line pressing play, with the alternative tactic moving the AMC forward to a TM
Now this is what I had in mind when I started clipping screenshots, i.e., some amazing anomaly to show off on reddit. But my curiosity drove me into an investigation, which turned out to be very amazing.
Bear with me.
Having decided to conduct an investigation, the first step is naturally to find all games where he scores. Hold tight, here comes the bombardment of games! (Due to the limit of amt. of pictures allowed in a post, I will only show the beginning, the end, and some key matches with an accumulative goal count--that is why the total goal count seems skipping)

1 Goal (Cumulative: 1)
1 Goal (Cumulative: 2)
2 Goals (Cumulative: 4)
3 Goals (Cumulative: 10)
2 Goals (Cumulative: 12)
2 Goals (Cumulative: 16)
2 Goals (1 pen) (Cumulative: 18)
Then, I proceeded to analyze his matches, hoping to explain why a WBL with 6 finishing, 4 long shots, and 12 heading are able to pull off a season like this.
The first match I reviewed was a 5-0 win over QPR:
Blue arrow: dribbles; arrows towards goal: goals and attempts; horizontal arrows: crosses completed, received (greenish) or intercepted (orange); green dots: interception and tackles
As shown above, the position of my wing back (support role) was surprisingly high, with average position around the middle line (not shown). In this match, Dijks scored 3 goals, with another attempt saved.
On the defensive end, Dijks made a total of 12 tackles/interceptions combined without 1 failed attempt. He had 242 touches throughout the game, making him the most popular passing target in my team.
Another game in which he performed well was a 3-0 win over Sheffield United:
Blue arrow: dribbles; arrows towards goal: goals and attempts; horizontal arrows: crosses completed, received (greenish) or intercepted (orange); green dots: interception and tackles; red dots: failed interception and tackles
Again, the position of my wing back (support role) was high, with average position around the middle line (not shown). In this match, Dijks scored 2 goals, with another 4 missed attempts.
On the defensive end, Dijks made a total of 9 tackles/interceptions combined and 4 failed attempts. He had 187 touches throughout the game, again making him the most popular passing target in my team.
Now, 1-2 defeat by the Potters, a game to forget:
Blue arrow: dribbles; arrows towards goal: attempts; horizontal arrows: crosses completed, received (greenish) or intercepted (orange); green dots: interception and tackles; red dots: failed interception and tackles
In this game, the attacking performance of Dijks was lackluster, with 2 shots saved, 1 missed, 2 intercepted crosses and 1 completed cross. It is worth noting that even though he was not productive, he had 3 shots (my team had 10. in comparison) in the game.
Defensively, he is still sound, with 9 combined interceptions/tackles and 1 failed attempt.
What about games that my team had to withstand pressure from a stronger side? A first example would be a lucky 1-0 counter-attack win away at Old Trafford in the EFL cup semifinal:
Blue arrow: dribbles; Red dot (attacking third): one blocked attempt; horizontal arrows: crosses completed, received (greenish) or intercepted (orange); green and yellow dots: interception and tackles (yellow being key tackles); red dots: failed interception and tackles
Dijks was against Álvaro Odriozola (RB) and Leon Bailey (AMR) this game. He was virtually non-existent on the attacking third, with 1 blocked shot, 1 completed cross and 3 intercepted crosses. However, he really shined on the defensive end, with 11 tackles (3 key tackles), 2 interceptions and 2 failed interception attempts. His 7.1 rating (goalscorer got 8.3, followed by 2 center-backs with 7.2) indicated his importance in this game.
(P.S. Dijks still had most touches in the game.)
Then there is the final against Liverpool:
Blue arrow: dribbles; horizontal arrows: crosses intercepted (orange); green and yellow dots: interception and tackles; orange dot: blocked shot; red dots: failed interception and tackles
Dijks was against Alexander-Arnold (RB) and Mohamed Salah (AMR) this game. He had 1 missed shot, 1 saved shot, and 2 intercepted crosses in this game--again, very inconsequential. But he again did his job on the defensive end, with 6 interceptions (most in game), 1 block, 3 tackles (second-most in game), 1 missed tackle and 1 missed interception throughout the game.
His 197 touches was again, the most in game.
Finally, I looked at some of the ordinary matches, a win and a draw:
https://preview.redd.it/iv1yvby1a4e51.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=ac6f8dc251a2275dac1ffea90fa907aa717376da
https://preview.redd.it/k1wpcvy1a4e51.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=95f0e50398e90f0f89f96e404656c93268a4238f
Dijks did not score in either of the games, and received an average rating (6.9 in both), but he was active on the attacking third, defensively sound, and had most touches on the team.
After a look at all these games, I have formulated a hypothesis: Dijks is a WBL on a team with no wingers, making him a core of possession when counter-attacking; he was given sufficient amounts of chances to shoot when cutting inside and at set-pieces (he did have impressive heading attribute for a wing back); and his 14 work rate and 14 stamina supported his role well. Over the season, he covered a total distance of 424 Km (13.2 Km per 90 minutes), and was given 91 attempts to shoot, third only to my two strikers (having 100 and 115 chances, respectively). The above and a little help from the FM God and voila, a top goalscorer is born.
Another thing I have found: ANALYZING GAMES IS SO DAMN FUN!
This is my first attempt at analysis, so please roast me :) And here is a question for you: knowing that he is only good as a sub for mid-table premier league teams, should I keep him and offer him a raise (knowing that my team will outgrow him in 2-3 years), or should I sell him while his estimated value is sky-high (11.25 M)?

Season Review

Heading into 2019, expectations were sky-high for SKC fans. Fresh off of securing the top spot in the Western conference and being one half away from going to the final game of MLS Cup, Sporting returned a bunch of veterans and brought in some new players to replace and improve upon the departures. We’ll talk about the players later, but suffice to say: they didn’t. Even the most pessimistic SKC fan wouldn’t have predicted the bottom falling out quite as hard as it did in 2019, causing SKC to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2010. It seems that everything that could go wrong, did. The fact that the season started off as well as it did made the collapse all the more painful.
We began our season in CONCACAF Champions League, beginning with the toughest draw of any MLS team: Toluca. Since SKC was the lower seed, we started our campaign at home, with the second leg of the contest being at Toluca. The result? 3-0, SKC. Goals from Nemeth, Gerso, and Ilie. Nemeth looked like the goalscorer we needed at the striker position, Gerso looked like he was going to put it all together with a goal and an assist, and Ilie did this. It was as great of a result as we could have imagined, heading down to Mexico with a commanding lead and no away goals conceded. Everyone expected a cagy, defensive match where we held on for dear life and advanced. Instead, Sporting KC scored in the 8th minute and never looked back, ending the game with a 2-0 victory and heading on to the next round 5-0 on aggregate. At one point, Toluca’s own fans were mocking their team, shouting “Ole!” every time SKC completed another pass. It was hailed around the league, with articles written about the historic win and pundits calling Sporting KC potentially the best pure possession team in MLS history. It’s safe to say that the hype was very real. Next up: MLS play.
We opened our MLS campaign against LAFC, who finished third in the West in their expansion year and were widely considered to be a real contender in 2019 (and for good reason). The game took place three days after the victory in Toluca, and three days before we were scheduled to travel to Panama to take on Independiente in the next round of CCL. Peter Vermes opted to play his full first choice XI in California, wanting to fight for as many points as possible to avoid digging a hole early. It would have worked, too, if it wasn’t for a meddling Diomande, who broke the 1-1 tie in the 90+4 minute to give LAFC 3 points. It was a disappointing result, but not cause for any panic. LAFC was good, SKC was tired, all was fine. Fontas suffered a hip pointer and was subbed out, but that’s no big deal. Oh, how naive we were. We didn’t know what was coming. Next up: Independiente. We traveled down to Panama and brought a 2-1 deficit, as well as an injured Salloi, home. SKC beat Philadelphia 2-0 in the home opener, calming concerns that things were going wrong. The home leg of the Independiente contest had SKC cruise to a 3-0 win, 4-2 on aggregate, and backup striker Hurtado was hurt, undergoing knee surgery and given a 2-3 month timetable for return.
The next two games were MLS play: a 1-1 tie with Colorado made notable by former SKC striker Diego Rubio scoring the opener before Russell’s incredible free kick salvaged a draw for SKC. There was also the 7-1 home victory over Montreal. Nemeth hat trick, Busio goal, tons of fun. Unfortunately for SKC fans, that was just about the last bit of fun for a long while. Their next win wouldn’t come until the end of May against Seattle. The next CCL matchup was against Monterrey, who completely obliterated SKC to the tune of 5 goals to nil. In the first leg. The second leg wasn’t much better, with Monterrey beating SKC in KC 5-2, for an aggregate score of 10-2.
The rest of the season was very bad and I won’t spend much time on it. Two wins against Seattle was certainly nice, but there were way too many embarrassing scorelines. 1-4 against SJ, 0-3 against Atlanta, 1-5 against LAFC, 2-7 against LAG, and 0-6 against FC Dallas all stand out. I’ll get into the players, but it’s safe to say that injuries completely and utterly destroyed SKC’s season. At one point, there were 6 players healthy enough to practice. SKC earned 1 point from the 6 games they played after August to close out the season.

11/21 Hasler Defender Removed: Contract Expired
11/21 Wallace Defender Removed: Contract Expired
Jimmy Medranda: Sporting loses another fan favorite in the expansion draft, as part of a deal including leaving Jimmy exposed and trading Zendejas to Nashville SC. Jimmy was always the heir apparent to Seth Sinovic, while also being able to fill in pretty much anywhere on the pitch. His 1v1 ability will not be forgotten, nor will his incredible goals. Unfortunately, injury really robbed him of a lot of time.
Adrian Zendejas: The three-year backup to Melia moved on in a trade with Nashville SC. He only made one appearance with the senior team, starting the 1-1 tie with FC Cincinnati.
Seth Sinovic: Seth was acquired by SKC in 2011 from the New England Revolution. Since then, he’s made 210 appearances for us before having his option declined this offseason. He was signed in free agency by the Revs. I think every SKC fan still believes that at some point before the end of the season, we’ll see Seth back on the team and winning the starting left back position. After featuring there for so long, and fighting off so many challengers, it just makes sense.
Benny Feilhaber: Another long-time SKC veteran, Benny returned this season from his stint with the Colorado Rapids while SKC was in the midst of its horrible injury crisis. He started 13 games, and gave us some life when we needed it most. Benny had his option declined and remains a free agent.
Gedion Zelalem: The extremely talented midfielder never found his footing under Vermes, only managing 5 starts for the injury-riddled SKC. His reportedly very expensive option was declined, and he was picked up by NYCFC.
Krisztian Nemeth: Oh, what could have been. Nemeth had a promising start to his second stint with SKC, scoring 7 goals in his first 11 regular season games in 2019, and 4 in CCL. Unfortunately, he would only score once the rest of the way en route to Vermes choosing to not renew his contract. Nemeth is currently without a team.
Nicolas Hasler: Hasler was signed for one year to be defensive/midfield depth, and he did just that in 2019, making 9 appearances for SKC. Hasley now plays for FC Thun of the Swiss Super League.
Rodney Wallace: Rodney Wallace was signed as wing/left back depth for 2019. He had one start, playing 27 minutes before suffering a season-ending injury. Wallace is currently without a team.

12/4 Puncec Defender Added: Signed through 2021
12/9 Shelton Forward Added: Signed through 2022
12/10 Pulido Forward Added: Signed through 2023

1/23 Kinda Midfielder Added: One-Year Loan
2/4 Dick GK Loaned to USL Championship side Phoenix Rising FC for the 2020
2/14 Reid Defender Added: On loan from West Ham
Richard Sanchez: Sanchez was acquired via the re-entry draft from the Chicago Fire after making no appearances in 2019 for them. He will serve as backup to Tim Melia while Dick gets experience on loan and Pulskamp starts for SKCII.
Roberto Puncec: Puncec was out of contract after playing for HNK Rijelca in the Croatian league. He appears to be the starting right center back next to Matt Besler, starting there in every preseason match so far. Puncec has played extensively in Europe between Israel, Croatia, and the 2. Bundesliga.
Khiry Shelton: Shelton returns after a short stint with SC Paderborn, during which he rarely featured and never scored for the senior team, while suffering an injury which caused him to miss substantial time. While Shelton was injured, Paderborn earned promotion to the Bundesliga, which seems to have proved too high of a level for Shelton. Nonetheless, he’s back in KC and appears to be much improved technically, and figures to be the backup striker and potentially a feature on the wing.
Alan Pulido: The Striker that was Promised. He’s here. Sporting KC ownership finally opened their pocketbooks, spending a rumored $9.5m on the Mexican striker who won the golden boot in Liga MX’s 2019 Apertura. Pulido appears to be the perfect striker for what Vermes wants, with a high defensive workrate, combination ability, positional flexibility, and a deadly finish. Expectations are sky-high for the player who more than doubled SKC’s historical net spend.
Amadou Dia: Dia returns to SKC after a three year stint in the USL with Phoenix. He will be the backup left back behind Luis Martins.
Jaret Townsend: Hey look a draft pick!
James Kasak: Hey look another draft pick!
Gadi Kinda: I Gadi say, this guys’ name seems Kinda great for puns. Kinda was acquired on loan from Israeli club Beitar Jerusalem. He had enjoyed a breakout season in 2019, scoring 7 goals and 4 assists from midfield in 16 appearances. The Ethiopian has yet to feature for the senior Israeli national team, despite appearing for their youth teams. He was called up for EURO 2020 qualifying. Kinda appears to be midfield depth, but is sure to push for a starting spot this season. He has impressed in preseason with his runs, footwork, and work rate.
Winston Reid: The 31 year old New Zealand center back is on loan from West Ham, who he’s made 222 competitive appearances for. Reid hasn’t made a senior competitive appearance since March 2018 due to injury. With almost two years off injured, this move appears to be a gamble that he can regain his form and once again become a top defender. If he does, he will undoubtedly be cemented in the SKC backline.

Returning Players

The Vets

Roger Espinoza: A bulldog in the central midfield, Honduran international Roger Espinoza was drafted by Sporting KC in 2008. Apart from two seasons he spent in England with Wigan, Espinoza has been a mainstay in the middle of the field, playing as a box-to-box destroyer. Roger lost a chunk of 2019 to injury, and another chunk to red cards (three, tying his personal “best” and moving into the league lead for total). He also proved just how much he means to this team, as SKC went on a terrible run when he was out. As Peter Vermes continues to search for a replacement for the 33 year old, expect Roger to continue to get plenty of minutes.
Matt Besler: Drafted in 2009 by the then-Kansas City Wizards, hometown hero Matt Besler has long been a stalwart in Peter Vermes’ defense. Apart from a down year in 2016, Besler has been one of the most consistent players in recent memory, but he’s 33 years old and his contract expires at the end of the year. Could this be the last year we see Besler in an SKC uniform? He looks to be entrenched as a starter and our captain, but it’s uncertain how much longer that will last with a potentially deep CB room behind him.
Graham Zusi: Zusi has been a near-constant presence on the wing for Sporting since he was drafted in 2009, though since the beginning of 2017 he has become Peter Vermes’ go-to right back. 2019 saw him named an MLS All Star, although most believe that honor was a year too late and not quite deserved this year. Regardless, how they told him was one of the highlights of the season. Graham looks to be the starter at right back yet again, but Lindsey is gunning for his position and Zusi may not be able to hold him off for much longer. Zusi’s contract runs through 2021.
Tim Melia: The 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year should need little introduction at this point, nor should his storied career move from Rochester Rhinos’ backup to MLS pool goalkeeper to his current tenure with Sporting Kansas City. While Melia, along with the rest of the backline, performed not very well in 2019, he will look to regain his top form as the starter between the sticks.

The New Core

Johnny Russell: Scottish winger Johnny Russell returns for his third year in Kansas City having made himself a favorite both on and off the field. Most often deployed as an inverted right winger, his strength and skill terrorized defenses as he contributed 9 goals and 9 assists in 28 games last season. Look for him and his pet turtle to continue to put the fear of god in defenders from the right side of the field.
Ilie: The 29-year-old Spanish midfielder is a product of the Barcelona academy and played for Barcelona B for five seasons before a short stint in 2. Bundesliga with 1860 Munich. After joining SKC in 2017, he locked down the starting defensive midfield spot, starting 67 of 68 league games over two years and becoming an essential part of the team’s midfield structure. 2019 saw Ilie start 27 games, and when he was on the field he seemed much less effective than in years past. An All-Star in 2018, Ilie will look to regain that form this year.
Felipe Gutiérrez: Chilean midfielder Felipe Gutierrez was probably the MVP of the team in 2019, scoring 12 and assisting 3. Guti was behind only Melia in minutes played, and could be found at all three midfield positions throughout the year, although Vermes obviously prefers him at the attacking midfield spot. His ability and versatility means that it’s a safe bet Guti Gang will be in contention for the most starts on the team, as well as team MVP.

Something to Prove

Andreu Fontas: Fontas, uh, didn’t exactly work out in his first year. His $1m salary was part of the reason why Ike left, and then Fontas only started 10 games, a number of which were very bad, before getting injured for several months. Once he was healthy, Vermes declined to include him in the 18, and Fontas had surgery as soon as the season was over, which will keep him out for roughly the first month of this season. It’s widely speculated that the front office plans to buy out Fontas’s contract, considering the additions of Puncec and Reid and the fact that Fontas doesn’t appear to be in Vermes’s plans even when healthy. The biggest stumbling block for that is his contract: guaranteed at $1m through 2022, it would cost $3m to buy him out and get the cap space that he takes up back. The fans want him gone, so we’ll see if the ownership continues the “injection of capital” and buys out his contract.
Botond Barath: The Hungarian center back entered 2019 as the third center back on the depth chart, but ended up starting 20 games, behind only Matt Besler. Barath wasn’t a disaster, but he certainly didn’t distinguish himself as part of Sporting’s backline. Heading into 2020 it appears that he will go back to being a third or fourth option on the depth chart, capable of stepping up when needed but unlikely to be a difference maker.
Graham Smith: The 24 year old draft pick has yet to impress for the senior team, starting 10 games and giving up 20 goals last year (including 7 to Zlatan and the Galaxy). Barring another injury disaster, Smith will likely find himself playing the whole season with SKCII, as the fifth center back on the depth chart.
Luis Martins: Brought in to replace Seth, Martins appears to have done what nobody has done before: actually replace Seth. Starting the final 9 games of the season, Martins flashed his potential on offense and appeared capable on defense. Martins will start at left back this season and will hope to provide that spark of offense on the left side that Vermes has been searching for, while improving upon 2019’s truly terrible defense.
Daniel Salloi: After leading the team in goals in 2018, Salloi suffered a pretty severe decline in production, only managing to find the back of the net once, in the second to last game of the season. By the way the team celebrated, you’d think we had just won the cup. Salloi was another player who lost time due to injury, getting hurt in CCL against Independiente. Daniel will surely look to rediscover his form this season, which should see him draw plenty of starts at left wing.
Gerso Fernandes: Gerso was another player hampered by injuries, breaking his left wrist in a game against New England. He had seized the starting role at left wing from Salloi after Daniel’s run of poor form, but wasn’t a clear-cut starter when he returned from injury. Gerso possesses speed that nobody else on the roster has, so he will definitely have a role to play. The battle between him and Salloi for the left wing remains open, and both will surely see plenty of minutes.
Eric Hurtado: Guess what happened to Hurtado in 2019? You’re right, he was injured. Sporting’s backup striker lost most of the season to injury, starting only 8 games, all after the season was pretty much over. It appears that the 29 year old will fall to third on the center forward depth chart.

The Kids

Jaylin Lindsey: After starting 6 games in 2018, Lindsey only started once for SKC in 2019. The reason? You guessed it - he got injured. Turning 20 this year, Lindsey will look to unseat Graham Zusi at right back, something that should be easy if Zusi plays as poorly as he did in 2019. Sporting a ton of personality, Lindsey is a fan-favorite and should at least get minutes rotationally, assuming he stays healthy.
Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal: Long-touted as the future of SKC’s defensive midfield, Kuzain missed his chance to get minutes with the first team by getting injured right when SKC needed players the most. Instead, he spent the entire season with SPR, often playing further ahead in the midfield than his preferred position. His passing accuracy of 88.4% shows his skill with the ball, and the 21 year old homegrown will look to have a breakout year with SKC II and potentially get minutes in the senior team’s crowded midfield.
Gianluca Busio: Sporting KC’s most promising prospect, 17-year-old Homegrown player Gianluca Busio, was the second-youngest player to ever sign an MLS contract, and is the second-youngest goal scorer in MLS history (thanks a lot, Freddy Adu). In his second full year as a professional, Busio took advantage of SKC’s injury situation by staying healthy, increasing his minutes from 153 in 2018 to 923 in 2019. While Busio occasionally looked lost, he more often did not look out of place playing with men significantly older than him. While he didn’t lock down a starting spot, Busio will look to improve on his minutes for the second consecutive year as part of a very crowded midfield.
Cameron Duke: The 11th homegrown player in SKC history, the 19 year old midfielder has been in the Sporting Academy since 2012, and has been part of the US youth national team at the U-14, U-15, U-16, and U-18 levels. Duke will almost certainly spend the entire year with SKC II.
Felipe Hernandez: Felipe Hernandez is the first player to go from a SKC Academy affiliate, to the SKC Academy, to the Swope Park Rangers and then to the first team. He’s been touted as the heir apparent to Roger Espinoza, and often looked the part while drawing tons of starts with SPR. He scored eight goals for the USL team, second only to the center forward. Hernandez has the potential to see some midfield time with the senior team, but look to see him spend the bulk of his time with SKC II
Tyler Freeman: The youngest player signed to the first team, Freeman spent the whole season fighting for minutes on a poor SPR team, starting only 12 games. The 17 year old forward will look to improve his minutes and production with SKC II this year.

2020 Preview

Things to Watch

WE GOT A STRIKER Mission accomplished. After spending years and years waiting for the ownership to open up their wallets and pay for a big-time number 9, they finally did it. And boy, did they do it. Sporting’s net spend on transfer fees heading into this offseason was approximately $4m. Alan Pulido reportedly cost $9.5m, or more than double that. If he can live up to his price tag and capitalize on the opportunities SKC regularly produces, Pulido will score a ton of goals.
What’s a defense? Unfortunately, all the goals in the world don’t mean much without a competent defense to back them up. 2019 was a horrible year for SKC’s usually stellar defense. They let in 67 goals, a mark only beaten by FC Cincinnati. Vermes has responded by bringing in two new center backs, Puncec and Reid, keeping Martins around after he started the last run of games last year, and letting everyone else get healthy over the long, long offseason. If SKC wants to be back in the postseason, the defense will have to massively, massively improve.
#PlayYourKids
The HashtagPlayYourKids movement had its ups and downs with SKC in 2019. A couple of kids missed out on opportunities due to injury, most notably Jaylin Lindsey and Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal. Busio managed to improve his MLS minutes substantially, however, and SKC fended off a couple of suitors to hold on to the extremely promising midfielder. If Vermes wants to boast one of the best academies in MLS, and he does, then he’ll have to give the kids some more time with the senior team, something he’s been criticized for not doing in the past. The players with the clearest path to minutes are Busio in the midfield and Lindsey at right back, along with Salloi at left wing, so expect to see those three to get a solid amount of time. There are seven total homegrowns on the roster, including Busio, Lindsey, Kuzain, Cameron Duke, Tyler Freeman, Felipe Hernandez, and Daniel Salloi.
Do the vets still have it? As the corollary to #PlayYourKids, SKC still has a number of older players on the team. The biggest question of this year might be “Was 2019 an aberration due to injury, or a sign of things to come for Besler, Roger, and Zusi?” While Vermes seems to be betting, at least initially, that the older guys still have what it takes, there are capable and hungry replacements waiting in the wings for them to slip up. This is likely the last window for trophies for those three all together, so they will have a strong desire to work hard and prove that they’re not completely over the hill yet.

Prognosis

There are a lot of open questions for this Sporting KC team, which means the range of outcomes is going to be wide.
Realistic Best Case Scenario Turns out, 2019 was entirely the fault of historic levels of injury! Sporting looks like the 2018 and early 2019 team, dominating with the ball, snuffing out counter-attacks, and scoring at will by committee. The team returns to the top of the Western Conference and is competitive throughout the playoffs, although not quite doing enough to win the whole thing - the roster construction isn’t quite there. The team does bring home a trophy, though, winning the USOC in a thrilling game.
Realistic Worst Case Scenario The veterans really are past it, the kids aren’t quite ready, and injuries do not stay away. The back line remains mediocre and Pulido can’t put the offense on his back. SKC misses the playoffs for the second year in a row, and calls for Peter’s job get much, much louder.
Realistic More Probable Scenario Injuries hurt in 2019, but they clearly weren’t the only problem. The defense improves from last year, but is just league average. The midfield is much better than last year, and 5 players play more than 1000 minutes, keeping everyone fresh and competitive. The front three really improves with the addition of Pulido, and SKC scores a ton of goals and is generally fun to watch. It’s enough to put SKC back in the playoffs, and even win a playoff game! Unfortunately, that’s where things end, as Sporting falls in the second round of the playoffs in a competitive game. They make a USOC run, but don’t win that either.

0' KICKOFF According to the Match Thread comments, we've got 90 minutes to turn this loss around. COYS
1' To be fair, the pitch does look awful. Boggy with patches of puddles and the markings could be football, could be rugby, could be anything really
4' What a let off. Dier loses possession and Newport have three on two. Trippier is completely missing and the attacker manages to put a ball that goes all the way through to a completely open Nouble, who (very luckily) skies it. Mixture of good pressing from Newport and some shite defending from Spurs
5' Newport are committing a lot forward and Spurs have to work hard to withstand some pressure
6' Wanyama loses possession, really softly, in the middle of our half. The attacker lets fly but it's easy for Vorm
9' Newport fans are cheering every time a Spurs player fucks up a clearance. It's about once a minute
10' A huge throw in from Newport, at the back of our defending third, is headed on and the following volley is hit over. Nothing positive from Spurs' play up till now
12' Kane (and Spurs) has his first attempt at goal after being teed up by Llorente on the edge of the box... and it goes, pretty slowly, miles off target
14' Foyth loses possession in our half again and my dad yells "This isn't the pitch! This is them not playing football properly!" I agree with Dad
16' Another foul by Newport as a result of their high pressing. you can't say they aren't having a go. We certainly aren't yet
17' Lads, we've got something else to moan about if we lose: the wind. Apparently that's how Amond almost gets completely clean through and not our terrible defending! He's flagged offside though, but the following few minutes continues to be a barrage of Newport attacks
19' We have our first opportunity to counter-attack, and it goes well up until the final ball from Sissoko (having one of his better games) is just too far ahead of Llorente. BT Sport are assuring us that it's just the wind. Dad's shaking his head. Don't know what to believe lads
20' Oh there's a drone over the stadium. Scouts are getting so clever nowadays
21' The drone's coping with the wind better than we are. - Yurilovescats
23' Trippier pushes over Labadie in frustration after an extended physical battle in the far corner of the Spurs end. Dangerous position for the cross...
24' What happened there?! Nobody touches it (although Sissoko was trying) and he manages to hold it. And... breathe
26' UPDATE THE SISSOKO NUTMEG COUNTER
29' After a spell of control, Walker Peters has an attempt from about ten yards which is blocked. Starting to find out footing here
31' CLOSE! Kane smashes it into the post after a Sissoko cross. We get a corner, somehow
32' BOOKING: Labadie picks up the first yellow of the game for clattering Dier about 35 yards from goal. Kane is looking hungry...
33' Over the bar, no sweat from the keeper
35' Another sloppy pass from Wanyama but the resulting attack is stopped by an offside call
37' Labadie, who's been involved in everything good from Newport tonight (and the only yellow so far), plays keepy-uppies around three Spurs defenders. Just awful
38' GOAL NEWPORT COUNTY: Wilmott gets the ball outside the corner of our b ox and swings in a dangerous pass. Trippier is caught in no-man's land and Amond heads it down into the corner. Newport County 1-0 Spurs
39' Why do we do this every time
40' “Let’s put out 10 defenders and Kane and hope we pull something out our ass.”-Poch - mrocks301
42' Newport come close again when Amond hits the outside of the post. They want it more, they're working harder. We need to improve - and before half-time
45' Two minutes' added time to come. Not necessarily a good thing
45+3' The referee blows his whistle and we wander into the tunnel with as much gusto as we ran around on the field. Not good. HALF-TIME: Newport County 1-0 Spurs
46' SUB: KWP off for Son
46' SECOND HALF We're off. COME ON YOU SPURS
48' It's starting to sink in that Son is playing at LWB. Make of that what you will
49' We've started with a bit more energy and a sustained attacking play gets broken up by a foul from Son
53' Vertonghen gets a cross in but it's too high for Llorente who had run a bit too early. Getting closer
57' Shirt-pulling from Labadie (who's already on a yellow) on Llorente and Trippier looks about to whip a cross in from a dangerous position...
58' Headed away, and Trippier has another attempt but Kane can't get above it. Should be 1-1 but it's certainly getting more promising
59' Vergonghen holds it up, Sissoko plays him in, but Kane can't get a clean shot and we have to start all over again
60' Yet another poor pass from Wanyama but Foyth, who's definitely grown into the game, sweeps up in defence before Sissoko accidentally backheels the ball when trying to get control
61' Alli is warming up. Who's coming off? Place your bets...
65' Spurs have a sustained attack but Trippier's cross is cleared easily and Spurs can't regain keep it up. Word from the bench is that Alli will be coming on for Llorente...
66' SUB: Alli comes on for Llorente
67' CLOSE! Alli slots in Son with a beautiful pass and Son fores an excellent one-on-one save from the Newport keeper Day
69' Foyth has a shot. He's been solid today but he's definitely not going to score any goals like that
71' Kane has another pop from miles out. Side netting and Day can waste some more time with the goal kick
72' Trippier puts in a dangerous corner that takes a deflection but the keeper can sweep it up. The attacking play is starting to come together... too little, too late?
74' SUB: Amond, the goalscorer, is coming off to be replaced by McCoulsky
77' There really hasn't been anything to report. Newport are playing with 11 men behind the ball and are taking their time over every dead ball. We've seen this before all season against smaller teams at Wembley. Where's our level if we cant break down a team set out to frustrate?
80' SUB: A complete shambles of a shot from Wanyama finishes another frustrating attack and Dembele gets subbed for Davies
82' Davies whips in a cross which the keeper parries and Dier's half-volley results in a corner. 10 minutes to go...
83' GOAL SPURS: The corner goes to the first man who, for a change, happens to be one of ours - Son, who flicks the ball to the back post and Kane taps it in. Replay? Or can we get a second? Newport 1-1 Spurs COYS
84' SUB: Newport bring fresh legs on with Dolan in place of Labadie
86' Trippier plays a beautiful first-time ball to Son who's making another excellent run and we have a corner which is cleared, twice
87' BOOKING: Foyth goes in late and hard and gets a yellow for his effort. Meanwhile Labadie gets MotM from BT Sport. Fuck 'em, we'll have our own MotM
90' Into the last minute of regulation time. Just a reminder that if things stay as they are, we'll be having a replay at Wembley - not ideal
90+1' Vorm punches the ball after a scrappy bit of play and Newport get a corner, which he smothers. Counter attack time
90+2' Willmott plays it up the field to McCoulsky and Foyth has to make an important challenge. Newport are in no rush to take the throw
90+3' A great ball in behind for Kane and the skipper takes it pass one defender but it's blocked by another. Davies over the corner which is punched clear...
90+4' Kane put in an outrageous ball to Alli who can't get his head to it. The players say corner but Roger East, in another weirdly wrong decision, gives a goal kick
90+4' FULL TIME: Newport 1-1 Spurs

Guide: Premium Defender Dilemma (£6.0+)

Here are my opinions running through some of the options at both the £6.0 and £6.5 price point in defence and their viability in obtaining a spot in your team. At such premium price tags, there is no question that these players should be making your starting XI, week in week out. Oddly this year, there seem to be less nailed on picks in the premium bracket, mostly as a result of both the World Cup and new managers coming in.
In spite of this for forwards and midfielders the £6.0 and £6.5 price points are high risk and carry a lot of uncertainty, although we may see a couple players emerge as solid picks at that price, it is hard to be confident as to which of these players will come out the block running. For £6.0 or £6.5 in defence, you can almost be guaranteed points, with players like Azpilicueta outscoring the top comparatively priced midfielder and attacker over a number of seasons in most cases. I’d be interested in seeing what people think about a load up in premium defenders from the start until we get a better idea of the mids and attackers who will perform, but that’s just an idea.
I’m trying out a similar, but new format, in order to try and convey the information more objectively, whilst still giving my opinion at the end, let me know which you prefer. As always advice is always appreciated, thanks!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chelsea
Azpilicueta (£6.5) / Alonso (£6.5) / Moses (£6.0) / Rudiger (£6.0)
The Blues will be hit hard by the world cup and although there may not be too many key absences in the actual defensive line, missing Kante’s ability to shield the backline and break up attacks for the first few games of the season could prove poor for Chelsea’s clean sheet potential.
As a somewhat unknown quantity, we are still not sure how Sarri’s Chelsea men will lineup. In spite of this, if we go off what we know from his Napoli days we could presume that Sarri will play some variant of a 433 with the obvious change from Conte’s days being a revert from a 5atb formation with wing backs to a 4atb. Sarri’s Napoli kept 19 clean sheets in the Serie A last season, which bodes well for Chelsea’s defenders, but it may well take a while for the team to adapt to the ‘Sarriball’ play style.
Moses
• The possibility of Azpilicueta moving to the RB position in a 4atb formation could mean either the rotation or dropping of Moses to the bench.
• Not the most prolific in the final third, but after his defensive development under Conte last season, Moses will most likely go into the 18/19 season as Chelsea’s second choice right back, if plans to sell Zappacosta go ahead.
• At £6.0, the price is probably a bit excessive for a player who won’t likely have guaranteed minutes.
• For £0.5 more the added security of Azpilicueta, yields more attacking returns and consistent minutes.
• For £0.5 less a punt on either Christensen or Emerson could prove beneficial, once we get a better idea of who might break into the starting lineup, either could hold phenomenal value.
Moses xG 0.13 xA 0.10 is one of the best in terms of premium defenders and only just shy of Alonso.
Rudiger
• At the same price as Moses, Rudiger offers an alternative way into the Chelsea backline, however with a greater chance of nailing down a starting role in the CB position.
• When starting for the Blues in 18 games they won 13, only conceding 0.7 goals per game. Without the German at the back, in 10 games they were left with a lacklustre 3 wins and 1.3 goals conceded per game.
• Most likely partnered with Christensen, unless further signings are made, Rudiger leaves somewhat to be desired in the attacking department. Although 2 goals and 1 assist last season, is far from horrendous, for a premium sum of £6.0, one has to question his value when put up against similar options with more to offer in the final third.
Rüdiger xG 0.08 xA 0.02
Alonso
• In spite of Alonso’s impressive underlying stats in the final third and notable attacking returns of 7 goals and 2 assists last season, it has to be noted that the implementation of a 4atb formation is less than preferable for Alonso.
• There have often been question marks over Alonso’s defensive abilities and the move to a 4atb formation would likely mean less offensive returns / a further position back in open play.
• Alonso could also be left more exposed at the back, especially without the third CB to cover him. This has lead people to believe that Sarri may prefer the more defensively sound Emerson over him.
• At a £6.5 price point it is hard to justify Alonso not only due to uncertainty over his starting position, but a likely reduction in attacking returns.
• There is a slim chance it goes the other way, and Alonso moves forward into a winger position, in which case it’s hard to imagine they’ll be many teams without the Spaniard.
with an xG of 0.14 and an xA 0.1, Alonso stands among the best per 90 minutes.
Azpilicueta
• Contrary to Alonso, a shift to a 4atb formation could demonstrate positive for Azpilicueta.
• A return to his old position of RB, whilst maybe decreasing bonus point potential, has the possibility to further increase attacking output, freeing him up to bomb down the wing more and put in his deep crosses which he is known for.
• With a tally of 2 goals and 6 assists, Azpilicueta would be my pick of the bunch if I were to go for a premium Chelsea defender.
Azpi xG 0.03 in last 4 seasons xA 0.05 average, except 0.13 in 17/18
We will have to see during Chelsea’s preseason how Sarri sets up, but it is hard to recommend any Chelsea defensive assets from the outset, with both the uncertainty of a new manager and the world cup playing into this decision. Nevertheless Azpilicueta still offers a great option in the premium bracket and wouldn’t be a bad pick.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Liverpool
Van Dijk (£6.0) / Robertson (£6.0)
Whilst they are less negatively impacted by the World Cup than Chelsea, possible defensive absences of Lovren and Alexander Arnold could hinder the Reds defence. Nevertheless strong signings of the midfield pair in Keita and Fabinho could prove vital in further solidifying Liverpool’s ability to shut out their opponents. It remains to be seen if replacing their entire midfield in one window will bring imbalance to a Liverpool side that exceed under Klopp last year.
Van Dijk
• Almost anyone who watched Liverpool’s games pre the signing of Van Dijk, will see the drastic defensive improvement since the addition of the Dutchman.
• Quickly becoming a rock in the Reds backline, Van Dijk is an integral part of Liverpool’s defensive system.
• Whilst he individually might not always stand out stats wise, Van Dijk is a player who will bring all the players around him up a level.
• This may not be the best in terms of FPL, but definitely boosts the desirability of Liverpool commodities elsewhere.
• Somewhat underwhelming in the attacking department, Van Dijk had 0 attacking returns last season.
• In spite of this, the Dutchman has been known to be decent from a set piece, and can score a goal with his head.
• At the same price of £6.0 as Robertson, whilst he may have a greater chance of scoring, the more consistent attacking returns of Robertson make Van Dijk a less favourable pick, as long as both are nailed on as they should be.
xG 0.08 xA 0.06 (basically same in 2.5 seasons in Southampton)
Robertson
• After a full summer off, Robertson should have the LB position nailed on for the Reds from the start.
• Known for his attacking returns, the Scotsman should rack up both a good number of assists and score the occasional goal fairly consistently.
• He scored 1 goal and got 5 assists last year.
• With fairly favourable opening fixtures, Robertson should be a solid pick, with a good chance of bonus points.
• Whilst many of the top teams defensive assets may be away due to the World Cup, Robertson could be the perfect shout for the premium defender slot, with both guaranteed minutes and a high chance of attacking threat from the outset.
• For now Robertson is the best pick from the Liverpool backline in my option and possibly even the £6.0 defender pool.
• When Alexander-Arnold returns to the Premier League after his World Cup run with England, he could prove the preferable option into the Reds defence at £1.0 less, until we see his return and consistent minutes, Robertson is the best pick for now.
Robertson xG 0.03 xA 0.22 Obviously his stats have massively improved since his move to Liverpool.
With a good set of opening fixtures and a side which will be looking to build upon the success of last seasons Premier and Champions League campaigns, Liverpool players should definitely be high up your priorities list. Nailed on in an offensive fullback role, with many of his opposition at the £6.0 price point missing out on the start of the season, Robertson goes down as one of my favourite picks for the premium defender bracket.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Manchester City
Otamendi (£6.5) / Walker (£6.5) / Mendy (£6.0)
Storming the league last year and becoming the first centurions in the Premier League era, a good chunk of Manchester City’s squad made it into their national teams for the World Cup. In fact only 7 of their players did not make it to the tournament and of the 16 that went, only two have embarked on the Citizens preseason US tour, those being Mendy and B. Silva. As we know, with Pep already known for his wheel of rotation and the World Cup adding further ambiguity around the City squad, it could be hard to find value in their players.
Otamendi
· Otamendi played 34(1) games last year, so seems to be one of the few players who is mostly free of Pep’s rotation.
· Scoring 4 goals during the 17/18 season, the Argentinian is clearly a threat from a set piece, and his attacking potency helps to at least somewhat justify his £6.5 price tag.
· Whether or not he makes the start of the season or not, remains to be seen, as he hasn’t joined the Citizens preseason tour thus far, but with Argentina only making the last sixteen, his hopes are more probable than that of Walker, Stones or Kompany.
· Should he start the season, which we should get a better idea of as we move nearer the opening fixture, he is a good pick for what should be consistent point returns, with less insecurity comparative to some of his competition in Azpilicueta, Alonso, and Walker.
· However £6.5 is still a lot, especially considering, Manchester City could be quite hard hit from the World Cup, having to play a patchwork defence at least for the first few GWs.
xG 0.10 (0.04 in previous seasons) xA 0.04
Walker
· With 6 assists last season, Walker also represents a decent attacking threat.
· 32 apps last season also proves Walker as one of the players less prone to rotation.
· Making the 3rdplace playoff with England means we could see a considerably late start to the Citizens campaign, as a result of 5 starts and 448 minutes played.
· With an xG90 of 0.02 and an xA90 of 0.16 he weighs up against Otamendi’s xG90 of 0.10 and xA90 of 0.04, take that as you will, but when choosing between the two, they are pretty similar. It’s a decision on whether you take the punt on Otamendi’s goals or Walker’s assists.
· It’s hard to see him being a great pick at the start, with a high chance of missing a good number of games, but as the season goes on, he’s probably going to become one of the better picks into Pep’s ever-changing team.
xG 0.02 xA 0.15 Similar numbers to spurs
Mendy
· Coming in at £0.5 less than both Otamendi and Walker, Mendy offers an interesting route into the City defence.
· Only playing 7(3) games last season, largely due to a serious knee innjury, it is difficult to tell how great his attacking potential is, and whether he’ll garner consistent minutes in Pep’s team.
· Nonetheless, creating 9 goal scoring chances and having 5 shots on target in just the 361 minutes he played, he definitely shows promise.
· One of the few City players to head to Russia and travel with the Citizens to the US, Mendy’s chances of starting are pretty solid, at least in comparison to the other premium City defenders.
· With the Manchester City defence looking makeshift for the start of the season, if you entrust the City defence to still shut out their opponents, then Mendy should be a great pick.
xG 0.03 xA 0.24 (7 games), 0.17 Monaco (25 games), 0.1 Marseille (56 games)
City being one of the worst affected by the World Cup, could see them struggle defensively in the opening weeks. With Pep’s wheel of rotation, there are limited options for City clean sheets, coming in at £5.5, Ederson is probably the best bet for consistent minutes, and could be more worth while than all premium City defenders. At £6.0 Mendy could offer value if he nails down a spot for the sky blues, but with options such as Robertson with more attacking potential and guaranteed minutes, it’s hard to bring him into your starting squad before seeing some concrete evidence for him as a pick. At £6.5 both Walker and Otamendi have a fairly decent chance of attacking returns, with Walker almost definitely missing the start of Manchester City’s premier League campaign, it is probably best to hold off until a later stage. Otamendi will likely be a good pick if he starts from the outset, but with Valencia also at £6.5 it may be a better option to buy into a team whose sole purpose is to keep a clean sheet at times.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Manchester United
Valencia (£6.5) / Smalling (£6.0) / Young (£6.0)
A team renowned for their ability to shut out the opponent and their occasional park the bus tactic, Jose Mourinho’s teams are always defensively sound. With the most clean sheets (19) last season, a defensive asset from the Red Devils is sure to be a good pick. However they too are quite heavily impacted by the World Cup and also quite regularly rotate their squad, but still not to the same extent as their Mancunian counter parts. With the holding midfield signing of Fred we could see not only the freeing of Pogba to attack more, but a further solidity in United’s backline.
Valencia
· Without summer commitments with Ecuador, Valencia should be ready to go from the outset for United.
· With not amazing, but respectable attacking returns of 3 goals and 1 assist last season, Valencia provides at least some danger in the final third.
· Most likely United’s most nailed on defender for now, the only other option for as many minutes would be De Gea, but at £6.0 he is not much cheaper, when alternative goalkeepers could represent better value.
· There is talk that Valencia could be phased out as the season progresses due to age.
· With the same points per game as Azpilicueta last year and without the insecurity surrounding Chelsea’s manager, Valencia could well be the best pick of the £6.5 going into the season, at least until Chelsea acquire some sense of stability.
(under Mou only) xG 0.05 xA 0.07
Smalling
· With 29(1) apps last season, Mike Smalling appears to be one of the more nailed on options as United’s centre half.
· The possibility of defensive absences in Jones, Lindelof and even Lindelof or Matic should mean Smalling starts for at least the first few fixtures.
· This could mean a weaker defence for the Red Devils, but with relatively easy opening fixtures and Jose still being Jose, clean sheets are still on the cards.
· With 4 goals last season Smalling is definitely an option for your starting squad, especially if you plan on an early wildcard.
· At £0.5 less than Valencia, the Englishman is definitely a solid pick, especially with about the same chance of attacking returns, However without as much of an assurance of guaranteed minutes.
(under Mou only) xG 0.06 xA 0.02
Young
· Another of my favourite picks at the £6.0 price point, the only thing edging it more in favour of Robertson is the fact that Young again will most likely miss the start of the season due to the World Cup.
· Coming off probably his best season with United last year, and with a reclassification to defender, Young could prove decent value at £6.0
· First choice in the long term, Young could be perfect to bring in when he returns to save an extra £0.5 if ou were to start your team with Valencia or one of the other £6.5s.
· Playing a fairly advanced role for the Red Devils and with 2 goals 6 assists last season, Young yields good attacking returns and may even be on some set pieces / direct freekicks.
· At £6.0 I think Young should be a great pick when he returns and will probably end up in my team, but we have to wait until he returns before considering him.
(under Mou only) xG 0.03 xA 0.14
With one of the strongest defenses in the league, a United defender or goalkeeper should definitely be a consideration for the first few weeks if not the whole season. Valencia is one of the best picks out of a very limited £6.5 bracket, but will most likely be usurped by either Azpilicueta or one of the City defenders during the season. For £6.0 Young hopefully will represent great value once he returns, but for now I prefer Robertson due to his nailed on position and great attacking return potential. The same could be said for Smalling, although he could be a good option, especially at the start, Robertson is still my preferred pick for the same price.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tottenham
Vertonghen (£6.0)/ Sanchez (£6.0)/ Davies (£6.0)/ Trippier (£6.0)
It appears the people in charge of pricing the players got a bit lazy when pricing the Spurs defenders, all valued at £6.0 bar poor old Walker-Peters. All jokes aside Spurs are another team that will be greatly affected by the World Cup almost as much if not more than the Citizens. With a large number of their 12 participants making the late stages of the World Cup, especially with key deficiencies in defence, we could see Pochettino’s side struggle early on, especially with harder fixtures to start of than most of the other top 6 sides.
Davies
· We know that Pochettino loves a good rotation of his fullbacks and whilst that might not be a problem early on for Davies, with Rose most likely out due to the World Cup, it is definitely something to consider.
· With 2 goals and 7 assists last year, Davies has a very prominent offensive aspect to his game and yields good attacking returns.
· With a high chance of rotation throughout the season, I would only consider Davies if we see a long-term injury to Rose.
xG 0.04 xA 0.14
Trippier
· With the same amount of assists but 0 goals last season, Trippier also presents a good chance of attacking returns.
· After a good World Cup campaign with England, arguably one of their players of the tournament, we have seen his ability to whip in a deadly cross, owever this also means he will likely miss the start of the season.
· Consequently if I were to pick one of Trippier or Davies for the start of the season, Davies would be my pick, don’t let the Englishman’s 24.3% ownership (as of time of writing) fool you.
· Without repeating too much of what I said about Davies, Trippier will also likely get rotated a lot during the season with Aurier, so probably best to avoid.
xG 0.02 xA 0.20 (0.44 in 16/17 but very small sample size)
Vertonghen
· Spurs player of the season last year, Vertonghen should be 100% nailed on.
· Despite not having a good chance of attacking returns, at all really, he has a good chance of BPS and his guaranteed minutes make up for this.
· After a deep World Cup run with 6 starts and 540 minutes played, it is safe to say the Belgian will miss a fair amount of Spurs opening Premier League fixtures.
· When he returns he is my pick into the Spurs defence and could prove a main stay all season given no injury troubles.
xG 0.02 xA 0.03
Sanchez
· Without repeating too much of Vertonghen’s segment, Sanchez shares similar worries about returning in time for the start of the season, however with Colombia only making the last 16 he should be back before the Belgian.
· With very little to offer in attacking threat, his main advantage is his play time, once he returns.
· But at the same price as Vertonghen, it is hard to make a case for Sanchez over his centre back partner, who is more nailed on.
· There is still very much a chance he makes Tottenham’s opening fixture, in which case it is probably a toss up between him and Davies for the best short term Spurs defender, but in the long term Vertonghen takes the cake.
xG 0.02 xA 0.00
It would probably be advisable to avoid all Spurs assets bar maybe Eriksen for a good number of weeks. If you were dead set on a Spurs defender for your starting team, Davies offers more in terms of attacking potential, but will eventually be rotated, whereas Sanchez will likely keep his place throughout the season, but offers little in the final third. Given their fixtures I’m not sure why you’d want one anyway. In the long term Vertonghen will be a good pick once he returns and will be an excellent way into a traditionally strong Spurs defence.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary:
At the £6.5 price point with few options, my preferred pick going into the season would be Antonio Valencia. One of, if not the strongest backlines in the Premier League, United will keep a lot of clean sheets and the Ecuadorian will pick up the odd attacking return. However be wary of Dalot who could be gunning for Valencia’s position as the season progresses.
After a couple weeks / months we could see either Azpilicueta or one of Otamendi / Walker become a more favourable option, but with ambiguity shrouding the Chelsea team at the moment and a small chance of rotation in the City defence, I prefer Valencia for now.
At £6.0 Robertson is by far the best pick in my opinion. A Liverpool team looking to build upon the success of last season, he is a great way into their defence. Nailed on and with a great cross on him, he is bound to get attacking returns. At £6.0 I would probably take him over any £6.5 option anyway.
Other players to watch at the £6.0 price point would be Mendy, Young and Vertonghen, but with at least both Young and Vertonghen looking likely to miss the start of the season they aren’t picks for your starting squad. A chance of Mendy making the start of the season makes him a more enticing option, but with the City defence looking more heavily impacted than that of the Reds, Mendy is definitely the riskier choice, as well as the lack of minutes we have actually seen the Frenchman play.
Let me know whether you would like to see similar pieces done on the various price points for midfielders and attackers, I’m definitely considering it given all the support I’ve been receiving, but I just want a better idea if people still want it, Thanks!

Pre-Match Thread: Arsenal vs. FC Koln - Europa League

Arsenal vs FC Koln
Competition: Europa League
Kick-off: 8:05pm, Thursday, September 14th.
Location: Emirates Stadium
Team news:
Arsene Wenger will rest a host of first-team players when Arsenal begin their Europa League campaign at home to FC Koln, but Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere may feature.
Petr Cech, Laurent Koscielny, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Granit Xhaka, Danny Welbeck and Alexandre Lacazette have all been left out of the squad
Wenger says the best way of returning to the Champions League next year is via a top-four Premier League finish.
"We did that for 20 years," he said.
"We got 75 points last year and overall, I am humble enough to be happy to win every competition," added the Frenchman.
"I think the best way to do it is through the Premier League."
Wenger has included Chile forward Sanchez in his squad for Thursday's game.
The 28-year-old - Arsenal's top scorer last season with 30 goals in all competitions - was close to joining Manchester City this summer before the Gunners pulled out of a £60m deal.
Opta stats:
  • This is the seventh consecutive season Arsenal have faced German opposition in Europe - they've faced Bayern Munich in four of those (2012/13, 2013/14, 2015/16 and 2016/17), Borussia Dortmund in three (2011/12, 2013/14 and 2014/15) and Schalke once (2012/13).
  • Arsenal and Cologne faced each other in the 1970/71 Fairs Cup, with the Gunners losing on aggregate on away goals. Arsenal won the home leg 2-1 at Highbury with goals from Frank McLintock and Peter Storey.
  • This is Arsenal's first European match not played in the Champions League since the 2000 UEFA Cup final, which they lost 4-1 on penalties to Galatasaray after a 0-0 draw.
  • Cologne's last European match against English opposition came in September 1995 - they routed Spurs 8-0 in an Intertoto Cup match.
  • In European competition proper, Cologne's last win over English opponents was in December 1976, beating a QPR side featuring Frank McLintock in the UEFA Cup.
  • The Gunners haven't lost a home game on a Thursday since Boxing Day 1974, losing 2-1 to Chelsea at Highbury - they've won eight and drawn three since.
  • Including qualifiers, Cologne will be the 64th different team Wenger has faced in European competition as Arsenal manager - he has registered at least one win over 56 of the previous 63 (89 per cent).
  • Lacazette has been involved in 10 goals in his last 10 starts in the Europa League (eight goals, two assists).
  • Of players to have featured in the Europa League for at least 600 minutes since 2009/10, Mesut Ozil has the best minutes per assist ratio, averaging an assist every 110 minutes. Ozil featured in the 2009/10 Europa League, assisting six goals in eight matches for Werder Bremen.
  • In three of Arsenal's last four European competition campaigns outside of the Champions League, the Gunners have reached the final - 1994 and 1995 Cup Winners' Cups and 2000 UEFA Cup final.
Betting:
Arsenal are just 4/9 with Sky Bet to make a winning start to their Europa League campaign, with Cologne up against odds of 11/2, while the draw is priced at 7/2. The Gunners are joint outright favourites at 7/1 alongside AC Milan, while their German opponents are given a 33/1 chance. Lacazette and Olivier Giroud head the first goalscorer betting at 11/4 apiece, while Artjoms Rudnevs is considered the visitors' main threat at 10/1 to open the scoring.

Pre-Match Thread: Chelsea vs. Arsenal - Premier League

Chelsea vs Arsenal
Competition: Premier League
Kick-off: 13:30 BST, Sunday, September 17th.
Location: Stamford Bridge
Referee: Michael Oliver
Links:
Arsène Wenger's thoughts on the game - it's a mental challenge there and we want to get it right
Team news:
Chelsea:
Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater is expected to be out until the October international break.
Drinkwater was an unused substitute against his former club Leicester last Saturday and missed the midweek Champions League win over Qarabag with a calf problem which means he could be out for four weeks.
Chelsea are likely to rotate their options after making changes for the Qarabag contest, with playmaker Eden Hazard in contention to start for the Blues for the first time this season.
Arsenal:
Arsenal are likely to recall a host of first-team regulars for the short trip.
Wenger made nine alterations for the Europa League win over Cologne but the likes of Petr Cech, Mesut Ozil, Laurent Koscielny and Alexandre Lacazette will all return to the squad at Stamford Bridge.
Alexis Sanchez will feature after playing the whole game on Thursday night, where Theo Walcott (calf) hobbled off. Francis Coquelin (hamstring) and Santi Cazorla (ankle) are definitely out.
What the managers say:
Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte: "I think that Arsenal is one of the six top teams in England and I think that they have a really good squad and want to fight for something important."
"For this reason, I think it is a massive game for us. When you play against Arsenal it is the same as when you play against [Manchester] City, Liverpool, [Manchester] United or Tottenham."
"Arsenal are a big rival. I don't understand why they can't fight for the title."
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "If you look at my record you will see that I played two years in England, in the Premier League, without losing games away from home."
"Last year, until we lost at Everton, we had not lost away for the whole year."
"Never in my life could I accept or understand that it is different away from home. It's just a question of how much you want it."
Opta stats:
  • After winning just four of the previous 16, Chelsea have won their last five home Premier League games against Arsenal, since a 3-5 defeat in October 2011.
  • The Gunners haven't kept a Premier League clean sheet at Stamford Bridge in their last 12 visits there, shipping at least twice in each of the eight.
  • Arsenal have lost their last five away Premier League games versus Chelsea, their joint-longest away losing run in the competition against a single opponent (also 5 in a row vs Man Utd between 2009-2013).
  • Should Arsenal concede here, it will equal their longest run of away games without a clean sheet against a specific opponent in Premier League history (13 against Liverpool between 1999 and 2012).
  • Chelsea have scored in 23 successive Premier League games at Stamford Bridge with over half of these (12) seeing them score three or more goals.
  • Arsenal have lost their first two Premier League away games of the season (0-4 vs Liverpool and 0-1 vs Stoke) - the last time that they lost their first three away games in a league season was 1954-55. Interestingly, this was also the season of Chelsea's first top-flight title win.
  • Arsenal last won a Premier League away game against a side that finished in the top six last season, back in January 2015 (2-0 at Man City) - they've since lost eight and drawn five of their 13 matches on the road against these clubs
Betting:
Chelsea are Sky Bet's 4/5 favourites with Arsenal priced at 3/1 while the draw is a 29/10 chance. Antonio Conte's men have shortened back in from 7/1 to 9/2 to defend the title after bouncing back from their opening-weekend loss, while the Gunners are already all but dismissed from the title race at 28/1.
Alvaro Morata is the 3/1 favourite in the first goalscorer betting, half the price of Alexandre Lacazette and Olivier Giroud, while Sanchez is enhanced to 8/1 to break the deadlock in Sky Bet's Price Boosts.
Chelsea possible line-up: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Cahill, Luiz; Moses, Kanté, Bakayoko, Alonso; Pedro, Willian, Morata.
Arsenal possible line-up: Cech; Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal; Bellerin, Ramsey, Xhaka, Kolasinac; Alexis, Welbeck, Lacazette.

Pre-Match Thread: Arsenal vs West Brom - Premier League

Arsenal vs West Brom
Competition: Premier League
Kick-off: 8:00pm BST, Monday, September 25th.
Location: Emirates Stadium
Referee: Bobby Madley
Team news:
Arsenal:
Mesut Ozil is in contention to return to the Arsenal team for the match.
The Germany midfielder has been struggling with a knee injury but is now back in training, while Theo Walcott should be fit despite being forced off with a knock in the midweek Carabao Cup win over Doncaster.
Danny Welbeck (groin), Francis Coquelin (hamstring) and Santi Cazorla (ankle) are missing, as is Calum Chambers who has suffered a recurrence of a recent hip problem.
West Brom:
West Brom midfielder Gareth Barry is expected to break the Premier League appearance record on Monday.
The 36-year-old, who made his professional debut for Aston Villa in 1998, will play in his 633rd top-flight game and break Ryan Giggs' record if he features at the Emirates.
Chris Brunt (calf) will be assessed along with Nacer Chadli (thigh) and Oliver Burke (hamstring) while it remains to be seen if Jake Livermore will return to the squad after being given a break by Baggies boss Tony Pulis.
Match stats:
  • West Brom won the last league clash between these two clubs; 3-1 at The Hawthorns in March. They haven't won successive league matches against the Gunners since March 1977.
  • The Baggies have suffered nine defeats away to Arsenal in the Premier League, a joint-high for them in the competition alongside away defeats to Chelsea.
  • West Bromwich Albion have won just five of their last 35 Premier League away matches (W5 D14 L16).
  • This will be the 10th time that Pulis has managed a team at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League - he's lost every one of the previous nine there with a combined score of 20-3.
  • The Gunners have now won seven successive Premier League games at the Emirates Stadium; their second-best winning run at the stadium in the competition after a nine-match winning streak between December 2014 and April 2015.
  • Alexandre Lacazette has scored in both of his Premier League appearances at the Emirates Stadium so far - no Arsenal player has scored in their opening three appearances at home in the competition.
  • The last Arsenal player to score in their first three home league appearances for the club was Brian Marwood in September 1988.
Betting:
Arsenal are Sky Bet's 4/11 favourites for the victory, with West Brom priced at 7/1 and the draw 19/5. The Gunners remain 28/1 shots for the Premier League despite their credible draw at Chelsea last weekend, while the visitors are 9/4 for a top-half finish.
Lacazette and Olivier Giroud are tied at the head of the first goalscorer betting at 11/4, with Jay Rodriguez and Salomon Rondon considered the visitors' main threats at 9/1 apiece.

UEFA Golden Boy Winners 2003-2008: Where are they now?

Alright you lot, it's been a while. How've you been?
Yes, I'm back again with a footballing history lesson none of you really asked for. I've split this one into two parts, I would say it's so we can have an in-depth discussion but it's mainly because I'm lazy. Hey, at least I'm honest.
I've done some similar posts to this one before, and the lovely people at 8by8 Magazine asked me to write them with a little more substance. You can see my past articles here:
PFA Young Player of the Season 1990-2000: Where are they now?
PFA Young Player of the Season 2000-2010: Where are they now?
Premier League Manager of the Season: Where are they now?
2003
RAFAEL VAN DER VAART
Club (at time of winning): Ajax
Position: Midfielder
Age: 20 then, 32 now
The winner of the inaugural Golden Boy award was a young Dutch boy from Heemskerk. At the time of winning he’d already been playing regular football for Ajax for three years, making his debut at just 17. Van der Vaart left Ajax in 2005 after a series of incidents that also sparked the sale of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, internet darling and absolute bellend, from Ajax after rumors that Zlatan had intentionally injured Van der Vaart during a Holland v Sweden game. The two were supposedly vying for the striker position at the time. Van der Vaart moved from Ajax to Hamburger SV and then on to Real Madrid for £10 million in 2008.
Van der Vaart’s time at Real Madrid started well with him being nominated for the Ballon d’Or in October 2008, but the next few years were not as kind seeing him reduced to a sub for much of his career, leading him to look elsewhere. So entered Henry James Redknapp into Van der Vaart’s life. In what was actually a fantastic piece of wheeling and dealing that would make Del Boy shed a tear, Redknapp managed to snag Van der Vaart for a mear £8 million after an £18 million deal to Bayern Munich had fallen through. He even got the Premier League to allow Spurs to conduct business after the transfer window had officially closed, presumably on the grounds that it was a top, top piece of business. In his debut season Van der Vaart was both Spurs top scorer and provided the most assists.
Van der Vaart currently plays for Real Betis, with injuries having plagued the later half of his career.
2004
WAYNE ROONEY
Club (at time of winning): Everton
Position: Striker
Age: 19 then, 29 now
Since the last time I wrote one of these, quite a lot’s happened for Wayne. It would be easy to poke fun at him getting knocked out by Phil Bardsley in his own home, but it happened and really the knowledge alone is enough for me. No the real story is that Rooney is now England’s all-time goalscorer. What makes it more magical is that he did it the right way. You can imagine it now: It’s Liverpool 1992, a young Rooney sits with his family, huddled for warmth around a burning Ford Escort someone at the pub “found”. Wayne looks up from the rat he’d been gnawing on and says “Mam, I’m gonna be England’s top scorer me. And I’m gonna do it by scoring dodgy pennas against San Marino and Switzerland”. Brings a tear to the eye.
Joking aside, the wake of Charlton’s record being broken sparked a desperate attempt by pundits to convince themselves that Rooney was in fact deserving of the record and that no-one had ever spoken ill of him. But the flurry of opinion pieces just served to highlight how sad it is that the media have made Rooney the scapegoat for so many of England’s failings over the years. Yes, he hasn’t lit up a major tournament since he was a teenager, but is it really his fault England have been so poor on the world stage? Should it really be expected that he has to be the one to get England over the line? Or should the blame be more on the FA for only producing one truly world class player in his generation and then pinning all their hopes on him?
  • 565 career appearances, 252 goals (0.45 goals per game)
  • 488 Manchester United appearances, 235 goals
  • 107 England caps, 50 goals
  • Career silverware: 5 Premier League titles, 2 League Cups, 3 Community Shields, 1 Champions League and 1 Club World Cup.
2005
LIONEL MESSI
Club (at time of winning): Barcelona
Position: Forward
Age: 18 then, 28 now
I was torn how to approach this little bio of Messi. What can I say? You all know who he is and what he’s about (if you don’t, he’s the third most famous Lionel in the world, behind Richie and Blair). I could talk about how he might worry about how aging will affect his game but unlike other players his age he shows no signs of slowing down. I could spend the whole bio just poking fun at him, but in reality that’s kind of impossible because at the end of the day he’s Lionel Messi. He’s dodged more in tax than I can ever hope to earn, he’s short but annoyingly that just makes him better at football and worse of all he seems like a nice bloke. At least most of the great footballers have the decency to be a bit of a knob to balance it out (Maradona, Pele, looking at you lads).
Undeniably the most deserving winner of the award and a footballer we are all lucky to be witnessing in his prime, Messi will undoubtedly become the impossible standard of all future Golden Boy winners. Perhaps even the anomaly that was too good at football - how many players will be built up to be “the next Messi” only to have expectation and inevitable disappointment tarnish their careers? How many already have been?
  • 525 career appearances, 429 goals all for Barcelona (0.82 goals per game)
  • 105 Argentina caps, 49 goals
  • Career silverware: 7 La Liga titles, 3 Copa del Rey, 6 Supercopa de Espana, 4 Champions Leagues, 3 UEFA Super Cup, 2 Club World Cup, 2008 Olympic Gold Medal, 2014 World Cup Runner-up, 2 Copa America Runner up.
2006
CESC FABREGAS
Club (at time of winning): Arsenal
Position: Midfielder
Age: 19 then, 28 now
It’s funny how quickly things change in football. This time last season Fabregas was lighting up the Premier League, his partnership with Costa the personification of Mourinho’s smug ability to seemingly always have one over on Wenger. Fabregas was hailed as one of the signings of the summer, his return to the Premier League in blue a masterstroke from Chelsea and a foolish missed opportunity from Arsenal. But time and football are cruel mistresses and both have taken issue with Cesc. While time is doing her best to turn Fabregas, Costa and Mou into a trio of greasy kebab shop owners, football seems to have forgotten about the three of them altogether. Chelsea currently lie 15th in the table with 8 points from 7 games and Fabregas seems to have lost his magic touch that defined the first half of every season he’s played. Although a more impressive individual display against Newcastle does suggest the skill that earned him this award may still be around it remains to be seen if the malaise that seems to have infected the Chelsea squad is temporary or indicative of a permanent shift in an aging Fabregas’ career.
  • 509 career appearances, 105 goals (0.21 goals per game)
  • 303 appearances for Arsenal, 57 goals.
  • 98 Spain caps, 14 goals.
  • 3 Catalonia caps, 0 goals.
  • Career silverware w/ Arsenal: 1 FA Cup, 1 Community Shield.
  • Career silverware w/ Barcelona: 1 La Liga title, 1 Copa del Rey, 2 Supercopa de Espanas, 1 Super Cup, 1 Club World Cup.
  • Career silverware w/ Chelsea: 1 Premier League title, 1 League Cup.
  • Also World Cup 2010 Winner, Euro 2008, 2012 Winner
2007
SERGIO AGUERO
Club (at time of winning): Atletico Madrid
Position: Striker
Age: 19 then, 27 now
Like a lot of young and talented Argentinians Sergio Aguero, along with the likes of Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez, was lined up to be the “New Maradona”. This would later establish what was undoubtedly the world’s worst father-in-law/son-in-law dynamic after Aguero married Maradona’s youngest daughter in 2009. I’m not saying that’s what caused Aguero to file for divorce in 2013, but can you imagine having to suffer through having Diego Maradona as your father-in-law? I bet he has a scrapbook full of articles about how you’re not as good as him.
Like so many strikers before him Aguero gained a reputation for himself in Europe at Atletico Madrid before making a big money move to the Premier League - joining Manchester City in 2011 for £35 million. In his debut year in the Premier League he quickly established himself as one of the league’s showpiece players, City’s talisman forward and a key part of Sky Sports Premier League advertising. His last minute strike against QPR has become one of the defining moments of the modern Premier League era, which due a planning masterstroke on my part I got to experience through live text updates sat outside a broken toilet on an overcrowded train from Middlesbrough to Sheffield. I’ve heard it was quite a special moment.
What is strange about Aguero is that unlike most other stikers there’s just something inherently likable about him. Even Manchester United fans don’t hate him really. I mean the nickname “Kun” on his shirt is the nickname his grandparents gave him as a kid and he even has a tattoo of it in Elvish on his arm. Come on now, how can you hate a bloke who loves his Nan that much?
  • 463 career appearances, 231 goals (0.50 goals per game)
  • 234 Atletico Madrid appearances, 101 goals
  • 68 Argentina caps, 32 goals
  • Career silverware: 1 Europa League, 1 Intertoto Cup, 1 UEFA Super Cup, 2 Premier League titles, 1 League Cup, 1 Community Shield, 1 2008 Olympic Gold Medal, 2014 World Cup Runner-up, 1 Copa America Runner-up.
2008
ANDERSON
Club (at time of winning): Manchester United
Position: Midfielder
Age: 20 then, 27 now
So I’m not really sure what happened this year. Maybe the pre-vote party got a bit heavy, maybe the England representative took the other lads out for a Nando’s, things got extra cheeky and they agreed to vote for Anderson “for the bants”. Whatever the events that led to him winning the award it seems Anderson is the only player on the list whose career didn’t quite pan out as planned. Or that’s what you’d think. Believe it or not in terms of silverware, Anderson is the second most successful Golden Boy winner of all time. Just take a moment to think about that.
In a way I’m being hard on Anderson, when he won the award in 2008 he was one of the hottest and most exciting prospects in world football and was rightfully recognised for that. Anderson was fantastic for Brazil U17s; picking up the Golden Ball at the 2005 World Championship and this exceptional form is probably what helped him secure a £20 million move to Manchester United in 2007. Yet somewhere along the way something went wrong. Brought in as replacement for Keane and Scholes, during his time at United Anderson struggled to keep a grip of both the central midfield spot and his waistline. Injury and off the field insubordination left Anderson in the footballing wilderness, with United eventually washing their hands of him, taking a loss as Anderson left for Inter Internacional on a free transfer in January 2015. Sadly there doesn’t seem to be a second coming on the cards for Anderson, on his Internacional debut he missed a penalty and was substituted after only 36 minutes into his second game, uninjured but still requiring an oxygen mask.
  • 261 career appearances, 21 goals (0.08 goals per game)
  • 181 Manchester United appearances, 9 goals
  • 8 Brazil caps, 0 goals.
  • Career silverware: 4 Premier League titles, 2 League Cups, 2 Community Shields, 1 Champions League, 1 Club World Cup, 2 Primeira Liga titles, 1 Taca de Portugal, 1 Supertaca Candido de Oliveira, 1 Campeonato Gaucho, 1 Campeonato Brasileiro Serie B title, 1 2008 Olympics Bronze Medal, 1 Copa America.

My Plymouth Team in FM15. Where are they now IRL?

So, I was getting through post-meals with family where it would be frowned upon if I was playing FM, but acceptable if I was checking stuff on the phone once in a while... I decided to look up how my players in FM15 are doing IRL, and I thought it would be cool to post my findings.
Context of my save: I'm playing FM15, managing Plymouth AND Wycombe from Sky Bet 2 to Premier League. I editted both teams to have Sugar Daddies owners, so it was a very fast climb to Premier League. My 5th season Plymouth won Premier League and Euro Cup. First year on ECL coming up.
GKs:
Marcus Bettinelli: IRL - Still at Fulham, current England international, valued ~4M€ MySave - Bought from Fulham on second season for 300k, currently valued 17M€, was recently called up to England NT but never played.
Paul Nardi: IRL - Still at Monaco, loaned to Cercle Brugge, valued ~2M€. MySave - Bought last season from Monaco for 3.4M€, currently valued 6.5M€, rotates 1/3 of games with Bettinelli.
Daniel Bentley: IRL - Free transfer to Brentford, currently in Sky Bet Champ, valued ~1.5M€. MySave - Bought for 2.2M€ on my first year. Sold him when I was promoted to Premier League to Swansea, for 15M€. Next season I stayed up, they were demoted.
DRs:
Andre Wisdom: IRL - Sold for 2.3M€ to Derby County in Sky Champ, valued ~2.5M€. MySave - Bought from Liverpool for 2.9M€ when I was killin it at Sky Champ. Current Eng NT international, valued 17M€.
William Kvist: IRL - Free transfer back to Kobenhaven, valued ~400k€. MySave - Bought from Wigan when I got promoted to Sky Champ for 375k€, valued 200k€, merely a tutor, captain, and a rotation for cup and easy games. Now at 34yrs old feels he needs to leave for first team soccer -_-'.
DLs:
Chris Solly: IRL - Still at Charlton, valued ~500k€. (wow that was a shocker!) MySave - Stoke bought him from Charlton for 4.8M€, I bought him for 5.25M€ from them when I joined Premier. Been plagued with injuries, still valued 7M€.
Rubén Duarte: IRL - Bought by Alavés for 400k€, currently valued ~4M€. MySave - Bought him from Espanyol for 1.9M€ when I was killin it at Sky Champ. Currently worth 7.25M€, dealing with maddening inconsistency. Almost sold him to Tottenham for 15M€ this offseason, but decided to develop him for one last year.
Bryan Oviedo: IRL - Sold to Sunderland for 2M€, currently valued ~2M€. MySave - Got him in Free Agency when I got up to Sky Champ, he was amazingly good, and when I got promotion, bunch of teams sniped him for his 15M€ release clause. He refused to discuss a new contract with Plymouth, so I also tried to snatch him with Wycombe and he ended up joining there, still one of the highest paid there, still killing it in Premier League, still haven't been able to replace him. Current value 11M€.
DCs:
Curtis Nelson: IRL - Free agent to Oxford United, valued ~250k€. MySave - Being the best Club HomeGrown player I had, I invested all I could in developing him. He is an absolute rock in my defense, the absolute King of "Key Passes" category every year, selected English Player of the Year among other prizes last season, already a club legend (both him and me) and just completed 5 games at Eng NT. Valued 14M€. Won't ever sell him, love this guy.
Jack Hobbs: IRL - Free Agent to Bolton, valued ~350k€. (another shocker!) MySave - Bought for 11M€ from Notthingham Forest during Sky Champ to start preparing to all the demands of Premier League. Has been pretty good, but now wants 400k€ a month and his friends in the team have an opinion on it too. Seriously considering selling him. Valued 15M€.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa: IRL - Lyon bought him for 9.4M€, valued ~2M€. MySave - Bought him from Roma for 3.5M€, average but dependable, tackles too hard every game, currently wants to join Real Madrid because they are a bigger club, might get what he wants. Currently valued 11M€.
Lloyd Jones: IRL - Free (?) to Luton in Sky Bet 1, valued ~100k€. MySave - Bought him from Liverpool for 950k€, because I need Club HomeGrown players. Can't trust him, constantly underproduces. Valued 1.3M€.
MRs:

Pre Match Thread: Southampton vs Arsenal

Southampton vs Arsenal
Competition: Premier League
Kick-off: 19:45 BST, Wednesday, May 10th.
Location: St. Mary's Stadium
Referee: Jonathan Moss
Team news:
Arsenal:
  • Granit Xhaka limped out of the win over Manchester United but should be fit to face Southampton.
  • Lucas Perez is also available following a thigh problem but Shkodran Mustafi (thigh) and Santi Cazorla (Achilles) remain sidelined.
Southampton:
  • Matt Targett, who played alongside Austin in Southampton's U23s on Friday, could return from a hamstring problem.
  • Defender Virgil van Dijk (ankle) and back-up goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.
Opta facts:
  • Southampton are looking to win three consecutive home league matches against Arsenal for the first time since 1985.
  • Arsenal are winless in their five previous away visits to St Mary's in the Premier League, last winning there in December 2003 (D3 L2).
  • Wenger has won only 25% of his Premier League games at St. Mary's (two of eight) as opposed to 60% at the Dell (three of five).
  • However, the Gunners did beat Southampton 5-0 away in the fourth round of the FA Cup this season. Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick in that match, while Danny Welbeck got the other two.
  • Shane Long scored twice the last time Southampton hosted Arsenal in the Premier League, a 4-0 rout on Boxing Day 2015.
  • Wenger's side have lost five of their last six away Premier League games - the same number they'd lost in their previous 27 on the road in the competition.
  • Southampton have failed to score in three of their last four home Premier League, the exception being a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.
  • Southampton have managed just 10 shots on target across their last five Premier League games and recorded none against Liverpool in the 0-0 draw on Sunday.
  • Manolo Gabbiadini scored four goals in his first three Premier League appearances (248 mins), but since then he's failed to score and attempted just one shot on target in 306 Premier League minutes (five apps).
  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has provided seven assists for Arsenal in the Premier League, including two in his last match against Manchester United. This is the same total as his previous five seasons combined with Arsenal.
Betting:
Arsenal are Sky Bet's 21/20 favourites with Southampton 12/5 for the victory while the draw is priced at 13/5.
Wenger's men were cut from 8/1 to 4/1 for a top-four finish after gaining ground on Liverpool at the weekend thanks to the Saints, who are 14/1 to grind out another goalless draw.
Alexis Sanchez is the 4/1 favourite in the first goalscorer betting with Manolo Gabbiadini considered the hosts' main threat at 6/1 to break the deadlock.
Arsène Wenger pre-match press conference
Possible line-up: Cech, Holding, Koscielny, Monreal; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka, Ramsey, Gibbs; Alexis, Ozil, Welbeck.

My Plymouth team in FM2015, where are they now IRL?

So, I was getting through post-dinners with family where it would be frowned upon if I was playing FM, but acceptable if I was checking stuff on the phone once in a while...
MRs:
Federico Cartabia: IRL - Free agent to Deportivo, valued ~2M€. MySave - Atlético Madrid bought him for 7.5M€, I bought him from Atlético for 3.5M€. Has been a beast as a winger, 12 goals, 23 assists in Premier League last season. Currently valued 27M€.
Nathan Redmond: IRL - Bought by Southampton for 13.5M, valued ~18M€. MySave - Just bought him from Norwich this offseason for 13.5M, to prepare for ECL. Excited to test him out. Valued 16M€.
Thorgan Hazard: IRL - Sold to BMG for 8M€, currently valued ~38M€. MySave - Got him cheap from Chelsea for 1.8M€, while I was still in Sky Champ. Almost lost him to release clause of 25M€, but was able to renegotiate the contract, problem is, he still has Match Highest earner clause and now nobody wants him. Still a decent rotation player, valued 18M€.
MLs:
Denis Cheryshev: IRL - Bought by Villarreal for 7M€, currently on loan at Valencia. Still valued ~7M€. MCs:
Martin Odegaard: IRL - Still at Real Madrid, currently on loan at Vitesse, valued ~4M€. MySave - Still on loan for 2nd year in a row, Real Madrid won't accept anything below 56M€ clause... I might just pay it... Valued 11M€.
John Obi Mikel: IRL - Free Agent to chinese team, currently a FA since few days ago! Valued ~3.5M€. MySave - Got him as a Free Agent to get team ready for Premier League. Solid player, helps a lot as a ball winning midfielder in hard games. Grossly overpaid. Valued 7M€.
Victor Camarasa: IRL - Sold for 7M€ to Betis. Currently loaned to Cardiff. Valued ~6M. MySave - Bought him for 4.5M€ from Levante for Sky Champ campaign. Has been a very dependable MC. Drew interest from Real Madrid last season, currently trying to sell him to Barcelona for 40M€. Valued 18M€.
