Attended my first ever pro clinic yesterday and wanted to share some thoughts. It was held at WYNCITY Bowl and Entertainment at Point Cook. Parker Bohn III, Sean Rash and Jason Sterner were teaching a group of 25 bowlers of various skill levels. I would say that I was probably the lowest-average bowler there (140) so felt a little out of place, but ended up having a great time.
The day started with an intro talk with some stretching exercises then we headed onto the lanes. Ran through drills for the next two hours (one step approach, two step approach, etc). The Pros were walking around during this time checking everyone's form and adjusting. I came in bowling backup and asked if I should continue as-is or go back to the conventional release. They told me to go back to normal and helped adjust my position and hold. Spent the rest of the day throwing like this.
After lunch we had the theory session with Parker. How the ball rolls, building your arsenal, mental game. Back onto the lanes for another session of practice then finished the day with photos and autographs.
All of the Pros were great and friendly. I spent most of my time with Jason and he's made me into a fan. Had some brief time with Parker who was honest and direct with his advice. Only had a quick chat with Sean as he was busy sorting out the ball drilling but told me to get my new ball (Brunswick Magnitude 035) pin-up and simple to allow for my lack of hook and control.
To be honest, all of the stuff I heard and learned throughout the day was nothing I hadn't heard before from various sources. There were no magical secrets revealed. For me at my skill level though, the basics are what I need to work on and it was good to hear this from the Pros. If you get the fundamentals right, everything will follow on from that. Sean said that Jason Belmonte's success was due to him working on his basics which in the beginning was not on the same level as other parts of his game. To paraphase Sean, he said he didn't like Belmo, but respected his skill and how he'd worked on improving his game. (Belmo was referenced a lot though not surprising due to being in a room full of Aussies).
I still consider myself a beginner, and as such I thought the clinic was worth it. I got what I wanted from the Pros, and I have clear actions to work on moving forward. Recommended!
