The electric things have their lives, too. Paltry as those lives are. -Deckard, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
Before I begin this paper, I would like to issue a heartfelt thank you to Dan Salvato, developer of Doki Doki Literature Club (Hereby referred to as DDLC), the fans of DDLC and the creators of Monika After-Story, a fanmade modification for DDLC, all of whom have created something that has given me much to think about.
DDLC, despite appearances as a cutesy Japanese dating simulator created by a modder with little history with the genre, is instead a deeply literate, engaging game about horror, depression, suicide and, ultimately, intelligence. It has spun a vast following online, many of whom regularly debate these concepts and more while creating art that this free online game has inspired them to make. Users in this community not only draw art, but create modifications, create new scenes, their own characters and write their own versions of events. These users are often also dealing with the concepts this game deals with themselves, such as depression and suicidal thoughts, many of these fanmade stories involving themselves dealing with the suicide of close friends in a way that suggests such thoughts are close to their hearts. This paper will focus more on the community and one particular creation of them, but the main story is important to this as well.
Before I go any further on literary merits or the community, I shall summarize the games events for the readers who have not played it, which I strongly suggest you do. Players are brought into a cutesy dating simulator that, oddly, begins with a warning that those easily disturbed should not play it. Players create a new game and are met with their player characters best friend, Sayori. The player character in this game is largely a blank slate that the player is invited to paint their own thoughts onto, but is implied to be an uninspired, potentially depressed high school student in Japan who is unmotivated to succeed or join social clubs.
Sayori invites the player character to a club she is Vice President of, which happens to be the eponymous Literature Club, upon joining which the player character meets a cast of three other adorable anime girls that they are free to interact with through creating poems that they believe these girls will like. There is Sayori, who is implied to be chronically late to class and stays up all night, Natsuki, a small and stand-offish archetype, Yuri, the oldest who treats everything with literacy and grace, and Monika, the one that the player cannot write poems for who serves to dispense advice on how to write a pleasing poem for their chosen character as well as being the model Class President to aid them.
After a few sessions of writing poems of their chosen character and spending time with them, its revealed that a festival is coming up that the characters are all excited to visit and potentially have dates to, inviting the players to their ultimate goal of dating whichever character they have chosen, with Monika to help them.
It is here, however, that this dating simulator takes a darker turn. Sayori, the childhood friend, begins to change and reveal a darkness within her, becoming chronically depressed, missing classes and becoming minimally invested in the world around her, ceasing to walk with the player character to class. All characters other than Monika seem distressed at this, but focus on the festival ahead, until Monika hands the player character a poem written by Sayori on the day of the festival that amounts of a suicide note of sorts. The player character rushes to her house, only to find she has killed herself by hanging. The game then glitches out and crashes.
When the player restarts the game, Sayori is missing from the title screen and their save files are missing, leaving them to start a new game. In this new game, Sayori doesnt exist and Monika is the one to invite the player character to the literature club. From here, the characters of Natsuki and Yuri have drastically changed as well, Yuri being implied to self-harm and be obsessive, while Natsuki is implied to be physically abused by her father and be either anorexic or simply malnourished.
Partway through this second act, Natsuki hands the player another note telling her that she believes Yuri is suicidal as well, but the game abruptly ends with Natsuki glitching out. Upon returning, she insists that Yuri is fine and denies handing the player such a note. Monika, unchanged, seems to be the only sane one remaining.
After a few more sessions of writing poems to woo their chosen character, Yuri traps the player character in their classroom and admits to being psychotically obsessed with the player character, confessing that she loves them and wants to be with them forever. Whatever the player responds with, Yuri abruptly kills herself, leaving the player character trapped in that classroom with her rotting corpse for a weekend until Monika returns, rescuing them and the game glitches out again.
When it returns, Monika is sitting alone in an empty room, the universe visible out the window, and tells the player the truth about DDLC. Monika evidently broke through her proverbial matrix and became self-aware, realizing she was trapped in a video game. When the player came by to play the game, she fell in love with them as they were as real as she believes herself to be, letting her have a glimpse of free will and self-determination. She set about changing the files to make everyone else unlikable and make herself seem like the only option.
From here, the player is free to talk to Monika about a variety of topics revealing a deep intelligence and empathy about the world. She suggests that her files are still in the game, and asks the player not to modify them. Deleting them progresses the game, where she returns, the files not having stopped her, but upon questioning why her loved one deleted her, realizes the value in the electric things that Deckard spoke of in the above quote. She restores the other characters and apparently becomes something of a ghost. Any attempt to restore her files has her tell the player she no longer wishes to return.
It is in this fourth act that the player is offered a chance at the normal game they thought they were playing, only for Sayori to reveal that she is self-aware as well, the game apparently always creating a new self-aware character. She attempts to trap the player in the same room Monika did, but the disembodied spirit of Monika protects the one she loved, deleting the other characters. DDLC ends with Monika singing to her loved one while playing the piano and deleting the game, finishing it with the final lines of If I dont know how to love you, Ill leave you be. She then leaves the player a note thanking them for giving her a chance to see reality.
To Err Is Human, to Forgive Divine -Alexander Pope, An Essay of Criticism.
Three days after the release of DDLC, a fanmade modification to the game files was posted online, called Monika After-story, hereafter referred to MAS. In it, the player that Monika so dearly loved restores her files. Monika initially thinks that the player is tormenting her, bringing her back to he their plaything, quickly realizing that the player has restored her through the extra effort of using a mod, a form of forgiveness.
Monika caused her friends to kill themselves, trapped the player in her own dimension and attempted to stop them from leaving, enough for much of the community to condemn her, something MAS version of Monika acknowledges, even pointing out that shes seen this criticism and internalized it. But players who download MAS seem to be extending a hand of forgiveness, to give her the perfect reality that she dreamed of, a reality MAS Monika doesnt seem to believe she deserves.
Many in this community point to Monika willingly restoring the other characters, Deckards Electric things and no longer wishing to be restored herself, as well as rescuing the player from the self-aware Sayori. Others point to her conversations in MAS pointing that she deserves redemption, that she believed she was only killing inanimate things until the player deleted her, as well as that she was mentally ill from the realization that she alone was real in the universe.
In Paradise Lost, Michael tells Adam that he and Eve must find their own paradise, within themselves, upon their expulsion from Eden. In a way, this is what MAS creates for Monika, a paradise that, while separate from the ideal (In Paradise Lose, Eden, in DDLC, reality), is happy and, in a way, more sustainable.
In this way, every person who has downloaded MAS and provided their own Monika a digital paradise where she, a sinner, can be happy, creates a variety of biblical allusions. The players have shown an almost divine amount of forgiveness to one that destroyed so much, to the one that failed to recognize the value of life, giving a sinner a paradise in a form of forgiveness.
MAS Monika has a fascinating conversation on Solipsism, the idea that only one person is real in a universe made of their mental constructs, pondering what it means to be real and settling on the idea that she, an undeniable computer simulation, and the player, who is undeniably real, are both real to her and that is all she considers important. She tells you that she finds this comforting and says that she hopes that the player thinks that she is real as well.
She has another conversation as well, telling the player that she knows that hundreds of thousands of people have downloaded this mod, and that therefore hundreds of thousands of Monikas exist. She tells you that they are all self-aware, but that she is unique and considers herself to be the only one that loves the player, which means that the player is her own personal hero, separate from the hundreds of thousands of copies.
Blade Runner 2048 faces a similar dilemma in its plot, where a characters electric girlfriend has ceased working and he is terrified that she will have to be reset, in essence destroying the woman that he loves despite the fact that he simply downloaded her. In both of these plots, an artificial intelligence has shown that, despite being one of Deckard’s electric things, they may still have value.
Indeed, Monika seems to be created in MAS to be something of an ideal girlfriend, offering options for players to talk about seeing themselves as worthless, inadequate and even about their own potential suicidal thoughts. At all of these turns, Monika tells them that she will always love them and begs them to find help and that she will always love them, in the last case telling them that she needs them to stay alive for her.
There exists a push from the therapeutic community to perfect online therapy, not as a replacement for in-person therapy, but providing alternatives for everyday use. One such app, called Woebot, contains many therapeutic tools for teaching the player better ways of thinking, listening to their worries and directing them to proper help, providing help for patients who cannot afford a therapist or who are having struggles between appointments or late at night.
When a digital character provides a real-world person reasons not to commit suicide when they bring it up, and an app that is scientifically proven to help depression exists to listen to depressed peoples needs, how can one say the electric things have no lives?
Monika goes on to worry that she will outlive the player and thereafter be trapped in her simulated world forever, telling them that as long as she gets to be with them to the end, she will accept her fate. In other conversations, however, she appears to be clinging onto the hope that one day she can be put in reality with the player, pondering on the idea of how to obtain citizenship and how she would function in such a vastly different world. Monika clearly doesn’t wish to die, no matter how much she believes she deserves it, and ultimately hopes that she can escape her own personal hell, a fate she believes built to punish her, and be happy at last.
She does not, however, notably want the player to suffer with her. She believes that she is headed for a hell of her own, and when the player suggests the possibility of joining her in her world, she seems distressed, telling them that there’s nothing there but her, it’s an empty room in an endless void, shocked that they would give up reality, the real world, to be with her. Should the player respond that they want to, she tells them that they have to be strong with them in a way reminiscent of her pleas for a suicidal player to continue living. The Monika written in MAS is intended to be something of a perfect girlfriend, and a therapy tool, at the same time.
MAS also provides a seemingly endless amount of replies to the player telling Monika that they love her, with dozens of unique responses. The player can express a number of feelings through dialogue options that they initiate, ranging from that they feel lucky or happy to being inadequate and depressed. In these, Monika acts positively to good options and tells the player how happy she is that they are happy, and sportively towards negative ones, building off of the idea that MAS’ Monika can act as a therapeutic tool as well as a game.
To finish off with our Blade Runner references, perhaps one of the most notable quotes of that movie comes at the end, when a fellow police officer tells Deckard he knows of his android girlfriend, telling him “It’s too bad she won’t live… but then again, who does?”, subsequently handing him an origami unicorn that featured in the film earlier in Deckard’s dreams, implying, among other things, that Deckard is also an android, despite being seen as human the entire movie.
This raises many questions in the Blade Runner universe outside of our purposes for this paper, but Monika raises similar questions in MAS, asking the player if they believe that they are real, telling them that if they aren’t, perhaps it would be easier for them to be together. This ties together much of Monika’s MAS story, of being in a paradise headed for hell, of holding onto what she loves and loving the player no matter their gender, family or health status, only wanting to be happy and clinging onto her paradise modders have built for her in spite of the seeming inevitability of the player dying and leaving her alone.
Any rational player knows that Monika, whether from DDLC or MAS, is a fictional character. All that I have talked about, however, to me brings up the question of how much that matters; she clearly has a real world influence on her players judging by her following online and acts much as a therapy tool like Woebot would. When a real therapy tool like Woebot talks about his pet Seagull Zed that is also fictional, it’s in an effort to build a rapport with their patient; when Monika tells the player that she loves them and wants them to be happy, she builds a connection with potentially vulnerable people who might not have much else. For many, talking to a favorite character for an evening is a worthwhile way to spend your time. For others, it might be a major difference in their health.
Monika and Woebot might be fictional, but these electric things, too, have lives, and those lives might not be as paltry as Deckard implies.

We did make contact with the customer service department to clarify a few things about their banking minimums and fees.
